The recent article in "Woman's World" includes a description of the Oxycise! Basic Breath, but gives some incorrect information about how to inhale.

(description given in the article)

"...inhale quickly through your nostrils, pulling your tummy toward your spine and pushing your chest out..."

This is a perfect description of chest breathing, but it's the WRONG way to breathe. If you inhale by tightening your abs and "pushing your chest out" you won't be able to take in much air, and you won't get the oxygen down deep into your lungs where it will do the most good.

Let's review the CORRECT way to inhale, for maximum oxygen intake:

Always RELAX your abdominal muscles on the main inhale
(Do NOT tighten your ab muscles or pull your tummy in until later)
Smile and breathe in, letting the air flow deeply into the bottom of your lungs!
Let your tummy expand freely as your lungs fill with air
(Do not raise your shoulders and Do NOT push your chest out. There should be very little, if any, motion in your chest)

I've been watching coverage of the 2002 Winter Olympics for the past few days. I am always inspired by the perfect physical condition of the athletes and awed by their performances. But I am even more impressed with their winning attitudes -- the final sprint to the finish line in spite of total exhaustion, the pressure to perform when the odds are against them, the "fire within" that carries them down the slope or across the ice, and keeps pushing them onward! And it's not just the medal winners who have this "champion attitude"... it's all of them, even the ones who come in dead last, and the ones who come from places where there isn't even snow on which to practice -- they are all out there, courageously giving their all!

It's amazing to see what human beings can accomplish when they set their minds to it! So what's the difference between them and us? Maybe just believing in ourselves? Is there any limit to what we can accomplish, if we think we can? Somewhere deep inside each of us is the inner strength that can "carry us to victory," whatever our goals may be. It's a certain "something" that can keep us going, even when the odds are against us, even when we can't see immediate success, and even when we still have a very long way to go.

It takes real strength and effort to take the first step in making positive changes in your life. And it takes inner "fire" to keep going. I believe that there is a champion inside each of us; We just need to discover our own inner strength.
