In our fast-paced, push-button, jet-age society, we are accustomed to seeing things happen very quickly. But our bodies don't work the same way as a computer or a light switch! Jill Johnson asks, "Have your forgotten that your body is natural? That is, it follows natural laws. In other words, it takes TIME to change your body. Realizing this -- and then resolving to make gradual, day by day improvements -- is one of the keys to lasting success.

When people try to achieve "instant" weight loss by drastically restricting their calorie intake, their efforts almost always backfire later. Debra Waterhouse, nutritionist and author of "Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell," writes: "Trying to starve a fat cell only improves its ability to retain fat." She explains, "Fat cells respond to famine, or calories restriction, by holding on to the fat they already have and by becoming more aggressive at taking in new fat once the diet is over. The result is a system of fat protection that can be very difficult to crack, especially if the system becomes stronger each time we diet." 

The best way to lose fat and KEEP it off is to aim for slow losses, not fast ones. Losing weight at an average rate of 1/2 to 1 pound per week will allow your body to adjust to the changes without causing your fat cells to stage a rebellion.

"I'm still breathing and have actually decided that if I am not showing outside results yet (as you know my cholesterol has dropped 23 points as of last test, and I feel certain other things are shaping up well inside), that I need to O! breathe MORE. So I have begun aerobic bedmaking and aerobic dishwashing and aerobic laundry folding, etc. It sounds silly...but if oxygen is what burns fat, (and we know that it IS), then I need to get MORE oxygen to my fat...so it will burn. Gonna do it.

"Had fun yesterday. Here in DC, the cherry blossoms were at their peak yesterday. I had a choice after lunch to eat a dessert or go for a walk. So I got in a cab and had it drive me to the far end of the trees. Then I walked back, O! breathing all the way...about 4 miles. I walked past the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Monument (tons of granite and a lot of waterfalls), past the Jefferson Memorial right on the tidal basin where the concentration of the trees are. While walking there, the wind kicked up and started blowing the blossoms off the trees and onto me.It was like walking in a snowstorm made up of white & pink blossoms...I love that! I had blossoms in my teeth from grinning so hard while I was walking!

"Then I walked past the Washington Monument which is an amazing sight all by itself and surrounded by cherry trees is astoundingly beautiful... past the White House and up Connecticut Avenue to my building. When I got back, I was not even out of breath...in fact I told my boss I didn't have to breathe all the rest of the day because I had done so well on my walk! (kidding!)"
