*A* About Cellulite...

Dimples... lumps... "cottage cheese thighs"... Any way you look at
cellulite, it's not a pretty
picture! But what IS it, and how do you get RID of it?
Cellulite is not a medical term, but one that was
first coined in European salons and health
spas. Believe it or not, cellulite is simply plain old fat. Dr. Stephen Barrett,
M.D., operator of the website Quackwatch, explains, "Many years ago, Neil
Solomon, M.D., conducted a double-blind
study of 100 people to see whether cellulite differed from ordinary fat.
Specimens of regular fat
and lumpy fat were obtained by a needle biopsy procedure and given to
pathologists for analysis
and comparison. No difference between the two was found."
"More recently," writes Dr. Barrett,
"researchers at Rockefeller Institute used ultrasonography, microscopic
examinations, and fat-metabolism studies to see how 'affected' and unaffected
skin areas differed in seven healthy adult subjects (five women, two men; four
affected, three
unaffected). The researchers concluded: (a) certain characteristics of skin make
women more
prone than men to develop cellulite; (b) the process is diffuse rather than
localized; and (c)
there were no significant differences in the appearance or function of the fatty
tissue or the
regional blood flow between affected and unaffected sites within
individuals." [Rosenbaum M.

So what causes the lumpy appearance? Dr. Barrett
explains, "Strands of fibrous tissue connect
the skin to deeper tissue layers and also separate compartments that contain fat
cells. When
fat cells increase in size, these compartments bulge and produce a waffled
appearance of the
skin."
What DOESN'T Work
Every year millions of dollars are spent on
products and treatments that claim to reduce cellulite -- creams, body wraps,
rubberized pants, sponges, herbs, vibrators, electrical stimulation, hormone
and enzyme injections, etc. But none of these products has been shown to produce
permanent results. Dr. Barrett comments that Endermologie may improve the
appearance of dimpled areas,
but the procedure is time-consuming and expensive -- and only temporary. The
Federal Trade Commission has successfully taken action against many marketers of
alleged cellulite-reducing products.
So what DOES work? Dr Barrett says liposuction
surgery may permanently help in some cases.
But any type of surgery involves high cost and potential risks. There must be a
better way!
Losing excess fat is the very BEST way to get rid
of cellulite. "The Bottom Line", Dr. Barrett concludes, is that
"The amount of fat in the body is determined by the individual's eating and
exercise habits, but the distribution of fat in the body is determined by
heredity. In most cases reduction of a particular part can be accomplished only
as part of an overall weight-reduction
program."

Tracy: "As for everybody else who has had
cellulite disappear, can I ask you, did it seem to
get worse before it got better? Mine seems worse than it was before, or because
I am looking
for changes in my body I am noticing it more? Thanks for any info."

Peachy: "Yes, I remember it was just lumpy,
then it was like cottage cheese, then it was like
moon craters (closest thing I can think of) I thought aarrghh.. and then when I
got obsessed with having no waistline.. I remember looking down one day and
suddenly seeing quads, flat smooth quads... Keep going.. image your fantastic
body in your mind, don't obsess, just expect it, it'll
just be there one day..."

Don't be alarmed

own theory is that
