Every year on January 1st, millions of people resolve to lose weight. And most of them make the SAME resolution year after year. Why is losing weight so difficult?

Excess weight happens when calorie intake exceeds the number of calories burned. So losing weight should be a simple matter of using up more calories by exercising or taking in fewer calories by eating less, right? In theory, yes.

But the reality of trying to lose weight is much more difficult and complicated, and can involve many separate factors. Childhood experiences, environment, genetics, activity level, eating habits, psychological issues, behaviors and attitudes can all play a part in helping someone become overweight. So a successful solution to a person's own weight problem needs to address all the factors that have brought them to where they are now, and must be tailored to their individual needs. This means that you are the person best qualified to analyze the events and choices and feelings from your past that have resulted in your current weight problem.

You might consider asking yourself questions such as these:

What things have contributed to my weight problem?
What is the most powerful motivator in my desire to change?
What things in life are most important to me?
Am I willing to make the necessary changes in order to achieve my goal?
Do I eat in response to emotional needs, boredom, or stress?
Could I be taking in a lot more calories than I realize?
What are some things I could do that would help me reach my goals?
What activities do I most enjoy doing?
What kind of exercise routine would be most enjoyable?
How much time am I willing to devote to exercise each day?
How would losing weight change my life? (positive ways? negative ways?)
What are my greatest challenges? Fears?
Where can I find support and encouragement? (friends, family, email support, chat room?)
What positive change can I make this week to help me reach my goals?
(etc.)

You are your own best solution to weight loss success, because you can discover by experience the strategies that work best for you. Try to think of previous weight loss attempts as learning experiences and not failures.

Reaching any kind of goal takes commitment, effort... and planning! If you make a plan of action regarding your weight loss goals, you are more likely to succeed!

Following are a few tips on setting and achieving goals from Karim A. Jaude, founder of a business professional coaching service. These suggestions apply to achieving any kind of goal, including weight loss.

• Identify your life values.

• Make it your own goal. Your goals must be your own. Weight loss goals are a perfect example. Planning to lose weight because you want to make a spouse happy is a sure path to defeat and depression. But planning to lose weight to help make yourself healthier and happier leaves you with a much higher likelihood of success.

• Set inspiring goals, but limit yourself to setting three short-term goals and as many long term goals as you want. Large inspiring goals put your subconscious mind to work creating paths of achievement. As you set short-term goals, choose goals that are stepping stones to reaching your larger goals. Every day, take six steps toward reaching your goals. The top six things on your daily action list should focus on your goals.

• Goals should be clear, specific and measurable. The more specific your goals, the more focused your mind becomes... When you set your goal be sure to answer these three questions: Do I really want this goal? How badly do I want it? Am I willing to do what it takes to achieve it?

• Reveal your goals. That's right. Tell people what your goal is and ask for help in reaching it. Successful people enjoy helping others reach their success. Telling others about your goals creates a compelling motivation toward action.

• Reward yourself. When you hit a milestone along the way, reward yourself. Plan each milestone, and your reward will help keep you focused.

"I injured my shoulder about 3 years ago. Several times...in the same spot. I fell and hit it several times. I could not raise my arm because it hurt so much and was very stiff. When I first began to Oxycise! I would have to lift my right arm with my other hand, if I was doing a position that required raising that arm. If I reached for anything in my cupboard I would have to put my left hand on my right elbow and help that arm down or I would drop whatever I was retrieving.

"Dear Jill Johnson,
I am writing to tell you about the program I am running using Oxycise! and the great success my classes have experienced.

"My name is Teri Havener and I am an AFAA certified fitness instructor. I have personally worked out for 20 years and have worked in the fitness industry 10 years. I currently run the fitness department at On Top of the World, a large retirement community in Ocala, Florida. We have 25 pieces of Nautilus equipment, 10 treadmills, a bunch of bikes, some free weights and a large array of fitness classes to chose from including; Tai Chi, Aquasize, 3 different levels of aerobics classes, etc.

"I first heard about Oxycise! from residents last summer. They brought me the Oxycise! ad from the Parade section of our local newspaper; the Ocala Star Banner. It made pretty big claims about weight loss. People seemed interested, so I decided to put it to the test. I organized a class around the Level One Oxycise! Program. In November of 2000, I trained 150 people to do Oxycise! Breaking it down into groups of 20-25, we weighed and measured everyone. I explained thoroughly the breath and we practiced it together. Next, we went through the positions slowly giving everyone a chance to ask questions along the way. Working with seniors, my guidance gave them a better grasp of what they're doing and confidence. After the initial training, they had 3 opportunities daily to view the Level One workout tape. I usually do the class with them and help with the cueing. Some were discouraged by the quick pace and felt they couldn't keep up. I encouraged them to keep trying and not to worry about getting every little sniff or puff.

"In February, we weighed and measured everyone again. The results were not dramatic, though almost everyone lost some weight and inches. Take into consideration we conducted this experiment through the Holidays... I was more impressed by the inches lost, particularly in the lower abdomen and hip area."

"Even more impressive were some of the other health improvements. Everyone seems to agree that they have more energy. Some commented that they didn't feel as good on days they skipped Oxycise! People with sleeping disorders or difficulties completely eliminated the problem or saw great improvement ... One woman hasn't slept more than 2 hours at a time for 8 years. She has tried to get help from doctors, sleeping clinics, even hypnotists, but nothing has worked. Well, the night before last she slept for 6 hours, a new record for her.

QUESTION: I am in my fifties. After doing Oxycise! for several weeks, I can tell that my muscles are stronger and my body feels more firm. I have also lost inches because my clothes are fitting more loosely. But I haven't seen any changes on the scale. How can this be?

ANSWER: Your inch loss is a great indication that you have lost excess fat. But you may also be gaining muscle weight. Don't worry -- both of these results are excellent! As we get older our bodies actually lose muscle mass, and our metabolic rate decreases. This is one reason why excess weight starts to creep on with age, even though our eating habits may not change much. Or we might see the same weight on the scale as when we were younger, yet have less muscle and more fat on our bodies. This is why it's especially important to exercise and strengthen our muscles as we age.

Adding muscle is also a great way to burn fat. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will use, around the clock. So gaining weight -- if it's muscle weight -- is a very good thing! Another plus: pound-for-pound, muscle is more dense than fat and takes up less space! So it's very possible to lose inches and clothing sizes, yet not have much change in weight, or possibly even a small gain.

Keep on breathin'! Oxycise! will help tone and strengthen your muscles and burn excess fat at the same time. You may even wish to add light weights during your Oxycise! routine to increase the resistance -- and help build your muscles even more. And the very best way to determine your body composition is by testing your body fat percentage every month or two. The scale doesn't tell the whole story!

During the past month we've said a lot about goal-setting. We've also mentioned the importance of putting your goals in writing.
But have you taken the time to do it? This is such an important principle, it bears repeating. Remember -- a goal not written down is just wishful thinking!
