I love your newsletter. I am a mother of 6. I used to do Oxycise! but we moved, from country to city, changed from home-school to 'real school' and now I am stressed and overwhelmed most days. My sad video sits collecting dust on the TV. I would just love to get inspired again, but the fear of quitting again is so painful. Poor me. signed: Selfish"

Dear "Selfish,"
First of all, your "name" doesn't fit at all! It sounds to me like you are very busy taking care of everybody BUT yourself! Life can definitely be demanding, and women are especially vulnerable to stress because of the many roles we play. We may feel at times like we are trying to balance on a tightrope, teetering precariously between coping and insanity!

How can we give our best to the most important people and priorities in our life when so many other things demand our time and attention? You can't draw water from an empty well.... so you can't keep on giving and giving to others if your "well" is running dry.

I have an email friend whom I really admire. I consider her to be a very wise lady who "has her act together!" She is a mother of 7, grandmother of 16, works full-time, and still manages to devote lots of time to voluntary Church service. She recently shared some great thoughts with me:

Be grateful. Look for opportunities to serve, but make sure your priorities are straight. Stop trying to run harder and faster than you can -- you'll just burn yourself out.

She added,
"Anymore we all work outside the home, we all help a bit in the community... we all have families that all have problems we help with the best we can. So many things are worth 100% of our time. Family, church, work... We can't do it all. And some days we have only 20% of our own strength to give due to stress, ill health, worry, whatever. So what we can do is give 100% of whatever strength we have ...even if it is not a lot...to whatever task we are doing AT THIS MOMENT... We don't have to give it all, we only have to give what we have and God will supply the rest."

Words of wisdom from the wise!

So what does all of this have to do with Oxycise? Oxycise! is a wonderful way to spend time taking care of yourself and your body. A healthy body feels happier and is better able to handle the demands of a busy, hectic life. Your health is (or should be) a "top priority" in your life. But sometimes it gets put on the "back burner." The problem is, if you don't pay attention to your body now -- by exercising, eating healthy and getting the rest you need -- your body will DEMAND attention later, in the form of health problems and costly medical care. So please take care of yourself --and your body-- every day! The fact that you are very busy makes it even MORE essential. Oxycise! will help you strengthen and replenish your reserves. Giving up just a few minutes of your time each day will actually give you MORE energy to do all the things you have to do and want to do -- and help you cope better with life.

Don't let the fear of quitting stop you. There's a Chinese proverb I really like.... "Don't fear slow progress, Only fear standing still." Better to try and quit -- and try again -- than not to try at all. Most of us struggle with being consistent. What really matters is whether we are trying to be a little better each day. Never give up!

So dust off that video and pop it in the VCR! And please write BACK and tell us how you are doing.

"I am 69 years old and am in my eighth week of doing the 'Easy Does It' program. The first four weeks I lost 4 pounds and about 8 inches. Since that time, although I have missed only one day since I started the program, I keep losing and gaining a pound and am not showing the loss of inches. I do still need to lose some of those. Can you give me some help? I am 5' 1" and weigh about 134."

Dear Edith,
This is a good example of what can happen on your scale when you are building muscle and losing excess fat at the same time. Most people over 40 NEED to build extra muscle -- we begin losing about half a pound of muscle per year, starting around age 30! And when you lose muscle your metabolic rate will automatically decrease. So you can actually GAIN excess fat, just eating the same as you always have. (This may be a big reason for "middle age spread.") But if you can add back some muscle mass (by
doing Oxycise! or other strength-training exercises) you will help your body burn extra calories 24 hours a day. And your body will look more shapely, even if your weight doesn't change. Keep in mind that a lean muscular body will weigh more than a fatter body of the same size and shape, because muscle is more dense.

As you watch for Oxycise! results, be aware that it's totally normal for both weight and inch loss to fluctuate up and down from one week to the next.... it's the long-term results that matter.

Jill Johnson has commented that when she lost weight with Oxycise! she was VERY diligent about doing her workouts and yet there were often days and even weeks when she didn't see any change at all on the scale. At other times she would see inch loss, but no change in weight. But as she continued to do Oxycise! consistently, the tape measure and scale would eventually start to show signs of progress again. Jill finally succeeded in losing almost 50 pounds during a six-month period!

Another way to measure your progress that is extremely helpful would be to test and monitor your body fat percentage. Many gyms and health clubs have the necessary equipment to do this. One customer lost 16" in 4 months, but no weight at all! Yet by re-testing her body fat percentage, she found she had lost 6% body fat, even though her weight had not changed.

What you want to see is a slow downward trend over a period of time, even though your day-to-day and week-to-week changes may seem inconsistent.

Slow and steady is the best way to achieve permanent changes!

QUESTION: When is the best time to weigh and measure?

ANSWER: In her booklet "Chart Your Success," (see http://www.oxycise.com/store/chart.htm ) Jill Johnson describes different ways to measure your Oxycise! progress. She encourages customers to watch for changes in Body Mass Index, Waist to Hip Ratio, resting heart rate, body fat percentage, and cholesterol levels. In addition, Jill tells how to chart your success by measuring your weight and inch loss. Those who use Jill's charts will see that weight is recorded every day, and measurements are recorded once a week.

Regarding the daily weigh-in, Jill advises:
"Weigh yourself at the same time of day without clothing or shoes. Your Daily Records and Pounds Away Chart will also help you track lost weight."

As you weigh yourself each day, you will probably notice that your weight fluctuates up and down by a few pounds from day to day. But as you become accustomed to your own normal weight range, you will also become aware of changes as your weight gradually drops over time. (Remember that gradual changes are more likely to be permanent ones!)

On page 14, Jill gives lots of tips for your weekly measuring. Included there is the following:
"Take your measurements at the same time of day -- in the morning or after you Oxycise!" Jill adds, "Remember that your body size will have fluctuations as you generally move in a downward direction."

As Jill says, "Keep the score, know the score, and the score will improve!"

In our modern society, we are accustomed to doing things quickly. Fast food, jet planes, copy machines, microwaves, FAX machines, instant messaging, instant everything! It's human nature to want things now, and we have become accustomed to GETTING many things right now!

But weight loss is a whole different story; Our bodies work according to natural law and Mother Nature doesn't work the same way as a light switch. It's vital to accept the fact that permanent weight loss takes TIME. Weight loss schemes that promise overnight results and losing LOTS of pounds fast, will probably just result in loss of muscle mass now, with greater FAT gains later. Quick fixes and unhealthy "diets" just don't work for the long haul!

Successful weight loss is the result of making healthy choices, consistent daily efforts, and gradual changes over time. And Oxycise! is one of the best ways to make it happen. "Dear Friends,
Since my husband and I have been doing Oxycise! for one month now, I'd thought I'd give you an update on our progress. Both of us have much more energy and stamina. Roger cannot do much more than the basic breaths, because of the osteoporosis which affects his spine, but he keeps up with the breathing as he sees it on the tape, and hasn't missed a day. His pants fit a little looser.

"I notice that my clothes fit more loosely, though I haven't lost more than a pound. I am 5'6" tall and weigh 126, which is normal for me. There is a big difference in my vital capacity, and I can easily walk very fast again with no strain. Dear Gail,
If you're up for it -- go ahead and Oxycise! 2 or 3 times a day. Most of us won't keep up that regimen for long, however, if you have a deadline there's nothing wrong with working extra hard for a few weeks.

Always do it with lots of power and gusto. Oxygen is the key -- so really keep it pumping in and out. Do lots of "extras" during the day.
