"You know you love Oxycise! when you take your tapes on vacation and ACTUALLY DO THEM! I recently went to Florida to visit my parents and I took along my Level 2 workout (my mom has Level 1 -- not that she does it -- but I'm working on her!). Anyhow, of the 13 days I was there I actually did Oxycise on 8 of those days -- this is the first time in my life that I've EVER done my exercise routine on vacation! It was especially funny one evening after my husband and I had been out for the day and came back late, he wanted to watch NYPD Blue and I couldn't use the only TV for Oxycise. So I did Level 1 from memory without the tape! You KNOW you've been doing Oxycise a long time when you can hear Jill's voice in your head.... I thought that I would drop a note to tell you that my husband and I travel very much throughout Asia, and reside in Japan. While we were back in the states in the spring of 2000, I saw the infomercial about Oxycise! Knowing how he and I both needed to exercise since we are either sitting in airports, on planes, trains, or in our offices, it really caught my attention.

"I had purchased exercise equipment to use at home, but since we have averaged being home a week per month in Japan during the past couple of years, it has been useless. I purchased small things like exercise stretch bands and such to carry in our suitcases, but nothing ever seemed to work out.

"I decided to write down the information from the TV and then called later on. I decided to order it and talk to my husband later about it. At first he wasn't sure about it, but then decided to give it a try. I thought that you'd be glad to know that he does it on the Int'l flights. He does it in the airports. He does it in the hotels. He does it just about anywhere. It is something that can be done anywhere, of course adjusting the movements to the location of where you are. "For whatever reason, I didn't continue to follow through and slumped off. Recently, I have made up my mind to follow through with 'O!' and already I have lost an inch off my waist in just a few days. I'll keep you posted in the future of my success. My husband has toned down and continues to lose weight through a diet but the real difference in shaping up has came through 'Oxycising.'

Hi Julie,
I have been benefiting from Oxycise! for 2 1/2 yrs. I feel great and and look slimmer than ever in my clothes!! I am proud to say that I am 58 yrs old and have never changed sizes - although clothes were getting pretty tight!! It was at that time that I decided to begin Oxycise! That was the best move that I ever made. I love the outdoors and now that Spring is here, I alternate Oxycise! one morning and a long walk the next morning. But, the secret is --- I still do my "120" deep breaths while I walk (same number of breaths as an Oxycise! workout). That really makes a difference to my waist and abs. What I love about Oxycise! is that I can take it anywhere and everywhere- even on a walk. Today, my walk was on the beach!

To get maximum "ab power" in your breathing, hold the "Lift" until the very last puff! In fact, try to scoop harder with every puff, as if you are trying to pull your lower abs closer and closer to your spine.

You might imagine that you are pushing the air out of a bellows, or compressing an old-fashioned accordion... or maybe flattening a tube of toothpaste from the bottom up. Work those abs! Then relax them for a big deep inhale.

Having a friend do Oxycise! with you can really help -- it's hard to back out of doing a workout when you know your friend is coming over in 5 minutes!

*A* Staying "on Track" With Oxycise!

You can't get from point A (where you are now) to point B (where you want to be) without covering the distance in between. In Oxycise! terms, that means you can't achieve results without doing the workouts consistently and faithfully -- they are the stepping stones that lead to success! Yet even people who have achieved results and have made real progress towards their goals may sometimes "fall off" the Oxycise! wagon for a period of time, and have trouble getting back to a consistent workout schedule.

Claire McDowell describes this phenomenon so well:
"The couple of times I've been sick or out of town and missed a few days of working out, I started to feel that immediate ebb of motivation about getting moving again. Even though I know it is the best thing in the world... I start making excuses and putting off that workout - I don't know why I do this, but I do! It is a huge problem."

Claire has done Oxycise! "off and on" for about 3 years, and says that even though she has had "remarkable results," she still has trouble being consistent.

"The minute something breaks my routine," she says, "I have a terrible time forcing myself back into the 'Oxycise! habit' - even though I love doing it and LOVE the effects. It's always been that way for me with any exercise. I am sedentary by nature, which is partly why I have had this lifelong weight problem. Getting back into the habit of exercise is like pulling teeth. Even if I've only missed three days. It's terrible."

The solution for Claire seems to be finding a "workout buddy" to help her stay motivated. She now recommends this strategy to others and reports:

"I have lost weight, toned and strengthened, my face is thinner and looks 10 years younger, and I feel fabulous. The key, I am convinced, is having a friend with whom I share an exercise commitment and who keeps me from falling too far down the 'lack of motivation' well. I know it's hard to coordinate schedules with all our busy, hectic lives but the workout buddy is making a huge impact on my ability to keep breathing! I recommend it! Good luck!"

Different tactics work for different people. So here are a few other ideas for improving workout consistency:

Try doing Oxycise! "first thing" every day -- before you allow yourself to eat breakfast or anything else. Then you can "cross it off your list" and start the day with a victory!

Write down your workout goals and plan out your schedule ahead of time.

Try alternating exercises. Some people are happy doing Oxycise! every day. Others may need more variety. You might try combining Oxycise! with walking, weights, or another activity you enjoy.... or alternate between several Oxycise! workouts from
day to day.

Reward yourself for doing your workouts. The positive changes you will see and feel will be very rewarding, but extra incentives won't hurt. Perhaps the promise of a new dress for doing your workouts 80% of the time for a whole month? (Decide ahead of time what the reward will be, and what you need to do to earn it.)

Keeping track on a personal chart works well for some people. It may be motivate you to be able to see a visual record
of your efforts, such as adding a gold star on the calendar, or your "Chart Your Success" booklet, for each time you succeed
in doing a workout.

Being accountable to a friend or family member...
You might ask a family member to "check on you" and ask, "Did you do Oxycise! yet today?"

"All of these vacation ideas are wonderful and I just wanted to add my own new discovery about using Oxycise while on the road. It has been extremely hot in the northeast for the past week and I have been vacationing in VT. As always, it's great to hit the pool at the end of the day and for the first time it occurred to me to do my oxy breaths while in the water. I did the standing positions as usual in the shallow end, then swam a few laps and did some of the floor exercises while floating on my back. I found that with some modifications, it was possible to do the wall positions against the edge of the pool.

"It makes a big difference if oxy breathing is done during a long road trip, not only for the added comfort in the car and the extra energy, but because most of us eat differently while on vacation. Eating in restaurants and tasting the local specialties can tighten the shorts quickly. Hey, who can pass up the Ben and Jerry's factory tour when you pass the place everyday?"

QUESTION: "I am a 69 year old woman who has been retired for 3 years now. I love my life and do Oxycise! pretty much on a regular basis. I have a question. This is a question on the minds of many women approaching menopause, even those who have never had a weight problem in the past.

Debra Waterhouse, a registered dietician, and author of the book "Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell", says that gaining weight during this time of life is Mother Nature's fault! Here's what happens: around age 35 a woman enters perimenopause (the stage before menopause) and estrogen levels begin to decline. This change sends a signal to the body's fat cells to increase in number and size and fat-storing ability (since fat cells produce some estrogen this helps offset the decline). And unfortunately, to the dismay of many women, the fat cells in the abdominal area are especially "talented" at producing estrogen. So these fat cells in the waist area have a natural tendency to grow the largest.

Two additional reasons for mid-life weight gain are that (1) our metabolism slows down and we have less energy as we get older and (2) we lose muscle as we age. In fact, the average woman loses 1/2 lb of muscle per year after age 35, and gains 1-1/2 pounds of fat. The result is a further drop in metabolic rate, an average 1-lb gain per year, and an increase in body fat percentage.

The good news is we don't have to totally surrender to "middle age spread." By fighting back, we can keep a gain of a few pounds from turning into MANY pounds, and regain muscle tone, strength and shape. Waterhouse recommends the following tactics:

* Assess where you can improve

* Keep a food diary for 3 days, to determine exactly how much you eat, when you overeat, and whether your eating is driven by hunger or emotions.

* Never skip breakfast or lunch -- and eat heavier meals earlier in the day when your metabolism is more active.

* Eat smaller and more frequent meals.

* Don't shave more than 200 calories from your daily total -- "A crazy diet isn't going to work, and more importantly, it will make fat cells fight harder to grow larger."

* Don't try to go totally fat-free... Waterhouse recommends a 30% fat diet (with 30% of calories coming from fat)

* "Only a handful" -- Try not to eat more than will fit into the palm of your hand. (Most of us eat twice what we need to satisfy hunger.)

* Eat anything you want, just less of it

* Listen to your inner voice -- are you really hungry?

* Stop muscle loss through strength training exercise

* Aerobic exercise

* Drink lots of water

* Take a positive view

These recommendations go hand-in-hand with many of Jill Johnson's recommendations in the book "Oxycise!", and the Oxycise! program is a great way to keep your waistline in control. Oxycise! provides aerobic exercise and toning/strengthening at the same time without heavy impact.

"I have participated in dance aerobics and step aerobics/total body conditioning classes consistently for the past 18 years. A couple of years ago, I started gaining inches around my middle (waist, lower abs, and hips), even though I had not changed my eating or exercise habits. Many of my clothes didn't fit, and although I was frustrated, I figured the change in my waistline was due to the 'middle age spread.'

"I am so sick of my body not doing what it did before I started the change of life. I never had problems taking weight off, but I was your typical "try this and that and lose the weight" and then put it back on. About 15 years ago I changed my eating habits to a more balanced, livable one and stopped when I was satisfied, not stuffed, and lost 75 pounds and kept it off. Then the big "M" hit and no matter what I do, I can't lose those extra pounds that seem to have attached themselves to my midriff section. I watched your infomercial three times before I ordered the product. I LOVE IT. I lost 2 1/2 inches the first week and only 1 inch the second, but my husband and I do the exercises together. I have some degeneration in my spine and normal exercises are out of the question, besides, I HATE to sweat. I really look forward to the time and don't mind it at all. My question is this, and maybe I missed it in the book, but is there benefit in doing them twice a day, like the "On the Road" Commuter CD in the morning and the others at night? I don't want to overdo and thereby lose the effect, but if this will speed things up I want to try it.

You can't overdo it with Oxycise! In fact, the more you do Oxycise! the more your body will benefit. Jill even suggests doing extra reps when you are waiting for stoplights, cooking dinner...whenever you can get in some extra OxyBreaths!

"Hi Julie,
I enjoyed reading today's newsletter. It is so important (and yet sometimes difficult) to be consistent with Oxy! The only way that it works for me is to "just do it" right away when I get out of bed. I brush my teeth and throw water in my face --- then off to the video with Oxy! Time passes quickly --WITH GREAT RESULTS!! I have been doing Oxy! for 2 1/2 years - most of the time, being consistent. Now I am "reaping the benefits." Even tho I am at a difficult time in my life with Menopause, I am determined that I can control my weight, toning and stomach!! I am 58 years old but I am proud to say that I am down one size. I have lost some weight, but more importantly, I have lost inches - especially hips and waist. Health-wise, I realize the importance of weight loss around the middle section. It felt so good to receive a compliment from my husband last week while I was combing my hair. He said "You really look good - I can see a big difference!!" WOW!! -- He made my day. I would recommend not to get disappointed with the weight scales - keep measuring weekly and pay attention to your measurements. You build muscle with Oxy! and remember, muscle weighs more than fat!! Also, alternating videos takes the boredom out of it. I alternate 3 videos: Level 3 and 4 and also "Abs and Upper Body." Besides that, I walk. For my age, my muscle-tone is great.

"Hi my name is Bonna, I'm 74 & have been using Oxycise! for about 3 months. I have always exercised one way or another, but this is the best. I have no weight problem at 110, but I had surgery for a frozen shoulder 4 years ago, & recovered nicely, but I began having a lot of problems with my neck & shoulders & especially my right shoulder blade. Most of my day was spent with hot pads or massagers & pain pills. I can't believe how Oxycise! has changed all that.

"We live in a Senior community & would be interested in leading classes here. Is there a way I could order some tapes to resell, but I can't afford to pay in order to take them to class. Any suggestions? Brochures? [See our response to Bonna's questions below].

"Finally! at the end of this weeks tip, there was a bit about proper breathing, but the best was the part on RELAXING WHILE BREATHING IN and THEN doing the tuck and breathing out!!! Now I'm getting in much more air and feeling alot more like I'm working out the stomach muscles too! Thanks for the tips! I always worry about not doing them right, and then maybe not getting the BEST results! Thanks to Jill for an easy, inexpensive way for us to get in shape, stay in shape and all while having fun and in the least amount of time! What a blessing!"

I was thrilled to watch Lance Armstrong win his fifth Tour de France victory a few days ago. This year's tour was his closest and most difficult, made even more inspiring because of the challenges he overcame: illness, dehydration, equipment problems, and crashes. I was also cheering for 4th place finisher Tyler Hamilton, who broke his collarbone one day into the competition, yet refused to quit. In spite of his pain, he kept on pedaling and even managed to WIN a stage race. An impressive achievement for someone riding with a broken bone!

So what does all this have to do with weight loss? A lot!

Whether it's a cyclist who trimuphs over steep mountains and other difficulties, riding to victory on the world's stage... or the quiet, private battles of an individual who struggles and finally succeeds at losing weight, both achievements require great courage, effort, and determination. It takes a champion to keep on going when the "going gets tough," and get back up after a "crash." It takes a champion to "stay in the race" when the challenges are great, and when the "finish line" seems far away.

Each of us has the potential to be a champion! It's there, somewhere inside--that determination and drive to succeed! We just need to find that inner power and tap into it! (Lance Armstrong is right... "It's what inside that counts!")

"I just wanted to pop in and say hello and post my success! I've been doing Oxycise! (off and on) for just about a year now and I have to tell you all it really works!

"Strangely, it doesn't work as well when I just -think- about doing it .. lol.. but when I actually DO it the pounds drop off quickly. Last year on my birthday I was in a size 20 and weighed almost 220. Now I'm more or less at 150 and in a size 8, without dieting. THANK YOU JILL!

"I'd probably be at the gym sweating away (or just thinking I ought to be at the gym) but I had some problems after my pregnancies that prevent me from jogging / jumping around / lifting / or even walking for long periods of time. My mom had bought the Oxycise! system a few years ago, which she promptly put in the closet, unfortunately for her. I found it there, read the book, did the video, and have loved it ever since.

"Everyone in my family thinks this workout is a bit corny, but they wonder how the pounds magically keep dropping off too. In fact some have decided I've never been overweight. I almost wish I would have kept my "fat pants" for proof! Or that I would have let people take a full on photo of me (instead of hiding behind someone or whatever) while I was big. Instead they all look at me with that expression of "you're thin because you were born that way, this won't work for people like ME" Now I try to get them to do it with me but I guess it's just too easy or something?? I'll keep trying. Meanwhile I'm sharing the news with everyone I know!

"My goal for this month is to Oxycise! 6 days per week and by doing so I hope to be down another 10 pounds or another dress size before my birthday. That would put me at a lower size & weight than I was in highschool! I'm super excited."
