It's great when you begin to feel your muscles getting more toned and tight. And it makes your day when your efforts are rewarded by a change on the scale or tape measure. .... But what do you do when the rewards DON'T come, in spite of your hard work?

You might first do an honest evaluation of your eating habits. (Studies show that most people UNDERestimate their actual calorie intake.) Is there any room for improvement?

Are you breathing effectively? Are you relaxing on your inhales (in order to get maximum air), and really WORKING (breathing muscles and other muscles)as you do Oxycise? Are you doing your workouts consistently?

Striving for improvement is always good.

But even when you are doing everything you can to reach your goals, there will be times when you don't (immediately) receive the "payoffs" you deserve! Some of the hardest challenges you will face, and the most critical "chapters" in your own "Success Story," will be those times (and they will come)when you are working hard, and doing Oxycise! faithfully, yet not seeing obvious changes. During these times you may feel discouraged and feel like giving up. And it's during these lulls, or "plateaus," that the "battle" is won or lost. (Don't surrender!)

It may help to know that EVERYONE experiences "plateaus" in their weight loss. Even Jill Johnson, who lost almost 50 pounds during a six-month period, has described going for days, and even weeks, without seeing ANY changes on the scale or tape measure -- in spite of her diligent, faithful efforts. At other times the tape measure would show changes, but not the scale. Or visa versa. But in time--and that's the key--consistency DID pay off for Jill--as it will for anyone else who refuses to quit. Jill has commented that it's during these "slow times" that it's MOST important to remain consistent. Good things WILL come to those who are persistent.

A customer on the Message Board wrote:
"I've hit at least 3 plateaus in the last 2 months, and haven't lost anything for about 11 or 12 days, then suddenly I'll start losing again."

When I wrote and asked her how she was doing, this same customer shared the following:

"So far I've lost 44 pounds, 3 inches from my chest, 4 1/2 inches from my waist, 5 inches from my hips, and 3 inches from my thighs! I started on Jan. 17, 2003. And I had given up on ever being slim again!!! This feels sooooo good!!!

"My children tease me tremendously about my Oxycise!, but they love it that I'm having such good success. The boys call me "Oxy-foof" just for fun. My husband says all the right things, too!

The point of this story? Don't give up...especially when you FEEL like giving up! Regardless of the challenges you might be having, and the time it is taking to reach your goals, and even if you have "fallen down" and "crashed" a few times, keep going and don't quit! The greatest obstacle between you and success is your own doubt as to whether you can achieve it! (you CAN!)

"All of these vacation ideas are wonderful and I just wanted to add my own new discovery about using Oxycise! while on the road. It has been extremely hot in the northeast for the past week and I have been vacationing in VT. As always, it's great to hit the pool at the end of the day and for the first time it occurred to me to do my Oxy breaths while in the water. I did the standing positions as usual in the shallow end, then swam a few laps and did some of the floor exercises while floating on my back. I found that with some modifications, it was possible to do the wall positions against the edge of the pool.

"It makes a big difference if Oxy breathing is done during a long road trip, not only for the added comfort in the car and the extra energy, but because most of us eat differently while on vacation. Eating in restaurants and tasting the local specialties can tighten the shorts quickly. Hey, who can pass up the Ben and Jerry's factory tour when you pass the place everyday?"

"I wanted to get these words on paper, and am so grateful for learning that my continuing these exercises will likely help my lower back and sciatica. I've been doing them in the morning and went without Aleve for 2-3 days and didn't realize it until I thought about it. I haven't done it in 3 days (getting ready to start again after this note to you), and I notice that if I don't do the exercises and a couple of extra positions, my pain comes back. I moved recently and could only find my Level 2 Tape, which actually has the hamstring stretching that really helps my back and sciatica pain. What incentive to keep at it, huh? Now for my good news.......

"I lost 10-1/2 inches over almost 2 weeks!! And I didn't do the exercises every day, even (probably approx. 10 days out of 14). I've lost and gained with these exercises, but this is the most I've lost at one time. I gained it back because I stopped my O! I will continue this for the rest of my life and this is how I will do it....I do them in the morning, but I also do them in the car, while waiting on hold on the telephone, even a few reps if restaurants. I've determined that I will likely do them more during life events like above when it's time to combat getting a little bored with the routines, and just to keep switching back and forth. You know - - "mixing it up a little". This will keep me on the Oxycise! path!!!!

"My butt, hips and legs are tightening before my very eyes and I'm starting to feel like it's just a matter of time before I'm back to my 140 pounds again (I've got 80 to go, but I know it's coming).

After 3 months of the Oxycise! program I have lost no weight, no fat, and no inches. I don't get it...I am discouraged. Why is this working for everyone but me? I don't understand. I only want to lose 5-7 pounds. Any encouragement?"

"Dear Susan,
The key to success with Oxycise! is to do it with LOTS of power. Really pump in the air and blow it out hard, and flex your muscles with lots of intensity. Have you measured your inches? Do you have tighter abs, or legs or arms?

"Here is my quick "tone up" regimen that I just did last month. I had been traveling quite a bit for several months and all my clothes were too tight, and I had gained about 5 lbs.

1. Oxycise! five times per day. I never did more than two workouts back-to-back. So typically I did 2 workouts in the morning, two later in the morning, and one in the afternoon.

2. Drink lots of water.

3. Eat plenty of food -- but only from the A and B list in my Fuel for Success Book. (With very few exceptions.)

"The results??? I lost 7 lbs. in two weeks, and all my clothes were loose on me. Now I'm back doing Oxycise! once or twice a day, and eating healthy -- with a few more exceptions. Go for it! You'll love it."

My husband, whose bicycle helmet probably saved his life (if not all his skin) in a nasty crash this past week, said, "You should tell your customers that one nice thing about Oxycise! is that they don't have to wear a helmet...unless they really want to!" (It's good to know he has retained a sense of humor, in spite of head-to-toe "boo-boos!")

"Hello, I can't tell you pounds or inches lost, but I am living proof that if we keep deep breathing every day or at least 5 days a week, things do change. *A* Maximize Your Workout!
***************************************
To get the most from your Oxycise! workouts, use POWER and GUSTO in your breathing -- and in your muscles! Breathe deeply and add lots of energy to your workouts! Really WORK your muscles as you do the body positions!

Adding weights can also increase the intensity of your workouts. You might try strapping on some ankle and wrist weights (with velcro straps) to add extra resistance -- they shouldn't interfere with the normal body positions.

Paloma writes,
"This week brings another loss of 3 inches for a grand total of 9 inches in 3 weeks!!!!!!!! .... I have made no changes in my eating - I eat only when I am hungry and stop when I am no longer hungry. I think the key has been that I have been doing the exercises with GUSTO! Especially in squeezing the tush and sucking in the abs! Those are my trouble spots and I've lost more there than elsewhere. I also added my own variation to some exercises, like on the laying down pelvic tilt....I lift my buns off the
floor and squeeze like there's no tomorrow! Boy do I feel the burn!"

Here are some things you can try for increasing the effectiveness of your workouts:

Pay attention to your body throughout the workout.

Remember to RELAX your abdominal muscles on EVERY inhale.

As you start thinking about tightening your arms or buns or abs more, don't get sloppy with the breathing! -- Constantly check your performance in BOTH areas!

Be your own "personal trainer" and push yourself just a little harder.... when you do the exhale and three extra puffs, think, "push, push, PUSH!" or "scoop, scoop, SCOOP!" and really work your abs until you can "feel the burn."

Try working harder as you do the 3 sniffs, exhale, and 3 puffs, then "take a little breather" and rest your muscles during each inhale...then re-tighten and re-flex with extra effort as you begin the Lift/3 sniffs.

Even a LITTLE extra effort on each breath will add up to BIG improvements in your workout, and better overall results!

"Hi, Julie:
I just wanted to let you know how using Oxycise! with weights has been.

"My husband bought me two wrist and two ankle weights, 2-1/2 pounds each. The type that wrap around (great idea). I did level 1 on Saturday and Sunday using the weights, and have come to the conclusion that this is a TOTALLY NEW BALL GAME. After I was done I could really feel the oxygen coursing through my body...lots of tingling. I feel more sore, too, like I've really worked my muscles harder. Oxycise! at Work!

"Hi Julie, I started the Oxycise! during my lunch break at work a few months ago, (we do the first 20 positions that are not on the floor), and I am happy to report I have lost 4" off my hips and 2" each in my bust, waist, arms and thighs. I have had 4 co-workers that have stuck with me and have been regular attendees. Others have come and tried it but did not stick. Of the four that have stuck with it, each one has noticed results. One co-worker was looking to improve energy and relieve neck and back pain and as an added benefit she has lost 2 and a half pounds (without changing anything else in her routine.) Another co-worker was looking to lose weight and to her delight also found that she could breathe better and easier. She said mostly she just feels "well". Others have noticed better posture and increased endurance. One new person just joined us and she said she feels more relaxed. We are all ready for a new routine though. I like the idea of combining the different levels throughout the week. We all have the routine down, but I think some new positions or more intensity will keep us going. What better use of 10 minutes, 5 x's per week!!!"

Give Yourself a LIFT!

Part of the Oxycise! Basic Breath incorporates the abdominal "Lift". The following practice exercise may help you understand and duplicate this step more easily:

Breathe in slowly and naturally, with your abdomen relaxed.
Then "fake" a cough and notice what happens to your abdominal muscles -- do you feel the LIFTING (as the muscles push UP, from beneath your lungs) and the scooping (of the lower abdominal muscles) that happens automatically?

Repeat, as needed, until you can feel the lifting, and scooping and the muscular power created by your abdominal muscles. Practice HOLDING this muscle contraction for longer and longer periods of time. The Oxycise! LIFT is simply a matter of "holding" this same contraction of the abdominal muscles by consciously tightening and scooping.

When you do the Oxycise! Basic Breath you will be doing the LIFT along with several other steps: the 3 sniffs, the exhale, and the 3 puffs. What you are doing is using the power of your abdominal muscles against your diaphragm. This creates an internal isometric exercise that will help tone your whole midsection.
