*B* HEALTH ALERT: FDA Seeks Ban on Diet Supplement Ephedra

The Food and Drug Administration just recently announced it's intention to ban the dietary supplement ephedra, saying it is too great a health risk to be sold to the public. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson says they have had more than 16 thousand adverse incident reports that have lead them to their decision.

More than 150 deaths have been linked to ephedra, which acts as a stimulant, speeding the heart rate and constricting blood vessels. Ephedra products have been marketed as sports-performance enhancers and energy boosters as well as weight-loss aids. Documented effects from such products include nerve damage, psychosis, heart attacks, strokes and seizures.

The ban could take effect by March and comes eight years after the Food and Drug Administration first began receiving reports that the herb used for weight loss and bodybuilding could be dangerous.

Thompson and the FDA urged consumers to stop taking ephedra-containing supplements immediately.

"Ephedra raises your blood pressure and stresses your system," leading to heart attacks, strokes and death, FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan said. "There are far better, safer ways to get in shape."

Even seemingly healthy people who use the recommended doses are at risk, although ephedra is particularly dangerous for anyone with heart disease or high blood pressure or who engages in strenuous exercise, he said.

An article in the Seattle Times states: "The announcement of the upcoming ban comes just in time, as many Americans gear up to shed extra pounds in the New Year.

"I wasn't extremely overweight, just ten pounds according to my doctor. You'd think that ten would be easy to lose, but it wasn't. Something 'happened' after the age of thirty (could it have been my eating habits, age, hormones, lack of exercise? Perhaps all of the above.) At any rate, I wanted to lose twenty, not the ten that would have put me at the top of the height/weight table in my doctor's office.

"Since I wasn't extremely overweight, he didn't want to prescribe any medication for fear of the side effects. However, I wasn't going to be deterred! Whatever it took, I was going to lose those excess pounds. So, I went to a weight loss clinic. I was given a brief physical exam, my weight and measurements were taken and I was given medication. Sure, they gave advice on eating right and exercising, but I was doing all those things for months and nothing had happened. I was desperate for some results. And the diet pills did work, slowly but surely. I lost ten pounds and stopped taking them. The weight came right back, much quicker than it had left. I realized that unless I wanted to take pills for the rest of my life I was going to have to try something else. And who knew what side effects I would have from taking the medication for years at a time?

"I heard about those 'weight loss' body wraps. You know the ones...they claim that you'll lose at least six inches in your first visit or your money back. I made the appointment and, yes, I did 'lose' ten inches. Sounds like a lot, doesn't it? It's not when you're measured from head to foot. They measured me in so many places (including my jaw and ankles - the only bony places on my body!) I could hardly believe it. They measured my thigh in three places and, of course, they marked each 1/8 inch loss as a
success. There wasn't one lasting benefit from the wrap. I lost no weight and the inch loss appeared to be from being bound so tightly for an hour! I could hardly breathe, let alone move around like they wanted me to!

"Then, as a massage therapist in a natural healing salon, some of my clients started asking me about natural weight loss methods. I gave them the same line everyone hears about eating right and walking, but I knew I was giving them the same line that I'd been trying to swallow for so long. If walking were such great exercise for weight loss, there wouldn't be any overweight letter carriers in the U.S. Postal Service - but there are many, of course.

There's something almost magical about the beginning of a new year -- it inspires us to
reach for the stars" and think about what we want to accomplish and who we really want
to be.

Imagine that person you want to become this year -- the "new you."   What is she like?  
How is she different from who you are now?   What small changes could you make, day

In her book "Chart Your Success" Jill says, "Keep the score, know the score, and the
score will improve." She recommends testing your body fat percentage as well as weighing
and measuring--to help you get a TOTAL picture of the changes that will happen in your body.

Jill recommends getting a body fat percentage calculation done before you begin Oxycise!
or early in your Oxycise! program -- then getting a follow-up reading taken from time to time
...perhaps every 4-8 weeks. By doing this you will probably see a quicker change in your
body than if you rely on the scale and tape measure alone. In fact, you may see a change
in body fat percentage even when there is NO CHANGE on your scale (or possibly even a
small increase in pounds).

We have received letters from very fit athletes -- people who weren't even trying to lose weight
 -- who have reported a decrease in their body fat percentage after doing Oxycise! for a few
weeks. Those of you who ARE trying to lose weight would probably see changes fairly quickly
if you could monitor your body in this way. One athlete even reported to us that she gained 5
pounds in spite of improved performance and increased muscle strength. She wasn't as
concerned as most of us would be -- she knew that the weight gain was due to the building
of extra muscle tissue.

We receive letters from some of you who are very alarmed when you see the scale go UP a
few pounds!  You may be burning fat and building muscle at the same time -- or it could be
just the normal ups and downs that happen on the scale from day to day.  If you aren't
monitoring your body fat percentage, you may be inclined to "freak out."  If the scale does
go up a little, don't panic!! If you are being consistent in doing your Oxycise! workouts and
not going crazy with your eating habits, things will eventually level out and you WILL see
positive changes, not only in body fat percentage but on your tape measure and scale too.

 Just wanted to report that I have been doing Oxycise! faithfully, for over 3 months. Everywhere I go people are asking me how much weight I have lost and I actually have not lost any pounds, just inches.  The other day someone I hadn't seen in awhile asked me if I had a face lift.

Oxycise! With a Friend!

Our friend Sharon says she uses the 15-minute Oxycise! Commuter tape while lying on her bed.  She stretches and flexes while listening to the workout.  Sharon says her friend "Sonny" likes the workouts too.... She explains that Sonny is a five year old male Iguana.... "He's a big guy, and he just hangs out while I do my Oxycise!  He likes the soft background music and Jill's voice. Imagine that a kind and generous friend offers to give you a special gift:  a brand new car!

But there's a catch:

You can have the car right now IF you are willing to give it back to him in 6 months.

OR...

You can work for him for a year, and the car will then be your's to keep. The drawback is that you won't get it immediately ... and you'll have to work for it.  But at the end of 12 months, it's your's for good.

Which is the "better deal?"  I think most of us would agree that it would be better to get the car permanently. But how many of us would be tempted to take the "instant" reward, even though it might not last? 

This little story illustrates the same kind of dilemma that many people face with weight loss -- should you choose an "instant,"  "quick-fix" diet, or some other drastic weight loss "solution,"  even though it may not be healthy and goes against your common sense, and even though you have no intention of following that kind of eating plan for the rest of your life?  

Or should you choose a plan that is safe and will produce permanent results, even though it will take time and effort on your part?

Sadly, too many people choose "instant results" at the expense of health.   Most "fad diets" and unbalanced eating plans WILL produce quick results on the scale, but it's often due to dehydration and loss of muscle.   They can also result in saggy skin and possible health problems later.  And people who follow fad diets usually gain back all the weight they lost -- and then some -- when they go back to their usual eating habits.

It's human nature to want quick results -- delayed gratification isn't easy!   But the BEST way to lose weight is to do it the smart way -- by taking things "slow and steady," by toning and preserving your muscle mass, and by making gradual, positive changes in your daily exercise and eating habits so that your "normal" way of life becomes a HEALTHY way of life.   By doing these things over time you will automatically become a more slender, healthy individual.

"Hello,
I started the Oxycise! program almost a year ago.  I started doing level 1 and am now up to level 3.  I plan to start doing level 4 very soon.  I often rotate the tapes and that seems to keep all my muscles in use.  I do one of the levels every day except Sunday.  I just can't do without my Oxycising!!!  Since I have been on the Oxycise! program, my muscles have firmed as if I were 20 years younger.  I am 57 years old. I look forward to it every morning.  The deep breathing, flexing and stretching wake me up and I'm ready for the day.  I haven't lost any weight because I am a small person to begin with.  But I was very flabby because of my age.  Now I have muscles that I didn't even have when I was younger.  My husband is always commenting on how firm and tight my body is now!!!  By the way, my husband also does the Oxycise! with me when he can.  He also loves it.  Another thing about the Oxycising is the mental wellbeing it gives me every day.  The extra oxygen I get seems to give me a natural high.  I just can't say enough about how great I feel.  Thank you Jill for the wonderful Oxycise! program."

"Hi Julie,
I didn't know where to send my comments so I'm sending them to you.  Seven weeks ago I had major abdominal surgery and was hospitalized for 6 days.  Two weeks after my surgery my pain had diminished considerably but I was extremely weak and tired and, naturally couldn't do any exercise so I decided to Oxycise! to see if it would help me.  Now I'm going to sound like a commercial.  I did the Level 1 workout very carefully and gently to make sure I didn't hurt anything and was amazed that immediately after my workout I felt some energy returning, so I continued to Oxycise! every day thereafter.  Here is what happened.  My abdomen was quite swollen from the surgery and within two weeks the swelling went down considerably, my energy level was back to normal at 4 weeks after the surgery (after 2 week of doing the Oxycise! workout), and best of all I have lost an additional inch off my waist and hips and have amazing energy.

"I had to smile when I read the story about 'Oxylizard,' the iguana who likes Oxycise!  I have been involved with Oxycise! since October 2000.  Last year we acquired a dog from the pound.  He is a Basenji & his name is Skip. 
 
"I have meant to take a picture of him to send in for you guys to see him 'Oxycising' with one of the videos on in the background.  I know it is just coincidence, but I swear it looks like he really is doing some of the stretches with me...especially the recurrent one he does of 'bowing down' in the front & sticking his rear end up in the air.  He is my faithful companion anytime I work out with an Oxycise! video.
 
"So, now we have Oxylizard & Oxydog...wonder how many other Oxycise animals there are out there?!"
