"Medical experts now claim that the biggest health concern in our
society is 'waist circumference.' In other words, having extra fat
around your middle is a BIG health problem causing a much greater risk
of heart disease, stroke, hypertension, dibetes, and cancer. All your
vital organs are in your trunk area, so if you carry extra fat there,
you are suffocating those organs and preventing them from functioning
well." ~ Jill Johnson

*A* Waist Away!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is the fat around your midsection putting you at greater risk for health
problems?
Jill Johnson says,
"Fortunately with Oxycise! you can whittle away your waistline and
improve your appearance and health. By figuring your Waist to Hip Ratio,
you can determine if your personal 'waist circumference' is putting you
in a high risk category."
From Jill's booklet "Chart Your Success," here's how to figure your
waist to hip ratio:
Waist Measurement in inches divided by Hip Measurement in inches equals
your Waist to Hip Ratio.
Guidelines suggest that Waist to Hip Ratios should be 1.0 or less for
men, and .8 or less for women.
Examples:
Man with 38 inch waist, 34 inch hips
38 divided by 34 = 1.12 (too high)
Woman with 29.5 inch waist, 38 inch hips
29.5 divided by 38 = .78 (within guidelines)
Here are just a few excerpts from the many reports we have received
about shrinking waistlines...
Phyllis wrote:
"I got my tape measure out after you suggested losing inches. I didn't
think I had, but much to my surprise I had lost 3 inches around my waist
and 2 inches around my abdomen."
In June 2002, Sage, from California raved:
"Holy miracles, Batman! A little over a year ago, a person working in my
office told me about Oxycise! I am a total skeptic and leery about
spending money for a scheme that says 'quick fix' all over it and fails
to deliver. So, it was with mixed doubt, hope, and desperation that I
ordered Oxycise! a year ago Spring and started on my birthday in April.
At first, I did it sporadically, trying to figure out if it would work.
Then, I dove in and did it regularly and watched the inches
disappearing. On April 15, 2001, I had 59" hips, a 43" waist, a 48"
bust. As of this month, I have 50" hips, a 37" waist, and a 42" bust!
That's a total of 21 inches! "
Terri said:
"I have been doing Oxycise! for about 10 days. I am so excited about the
results. (Which I've never seen with anything else) I have lost 10
pounds, 4 inches off my waist and 4 inches off my hips...."
Jean from Alabama reported a loss of 12.5 pounds, and 3.5 inches from
her waist after 2 months of Oxycise! She added, "I have done Level 1
everyday and sometimes Level 2 also. I cannot tell you how much better I
feel."
Kathy wrote:
"I was astonished to find that after only two days, I had already lost
2-1/4 inches in my waist. I was sure I had measured wrong. But when I
measured on Saturday, my waist was 2-1/2 inches smaller."
Ron, from Vancouver, said,
"I'm a regular user of Oxycise! and as a 48 yr old male can truly say
that my abs have never looked better..."
Nanette, age 52, from Texas:
"In two weeks I lost two inches in my waist and two in my hips and two
and a half in each thigh. I have kept it off for 4 months. Have lost no
more, and no more weight, but I feel that is phenomenal."
Christy from VA:
"Have Oxycised once a day for 4 months now and have lost 5 inhces from
my uper abs and 5" from that "pouch" of lower abs and 5.5 inches from my
waistline itself! And I can feel the muscle definition in my abs now
also (and everywhere else also). Believe me, it works!"
John, from Canada, reported going from a waist measurement of 43" to
38-1/2.
Eli wrote:
"Thanks for sending my Oxycise! package...I've been at it for 3 days and
can already see the early signs of a reshaping of my upper body. Also
notice a definite difference in the abs already, which is one of my main
objectives. It is clear that this will replace sit-ups in my routine.
Finally, from Robin in Lancaster, PA:
"After just one week I have measured a loss of 4 inches including 1-1/2
inches off my waist. No pounds off yet, but the difference in that
little "pouch" I was carrying around is incredible!"
EATING for BETTER HEALTH
Jill Johnson's "Fuel for Success" eating plan is an optional part of the
Oxycise! program. Jill recommends eating an abundance of natural, whole
foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and
seeds. Here's an excerpt from an article by Dean Ornish, MD, that echoes
Jill's beliefs.
"When you switch from a diet based on animal protein and simple
carbohydrates to a whole foods, plant-based diet, you get a quadruple
benefit:
* The high fiber content of fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans
reduces insulin levels, so you lose weight and lower cholesterol levels;
* When you eat less fat, you eat fewer calories without eating less
food;
* You avoid the animal-based products rich in substances that cause
illnesses;
* You get thousands of other substances that are protective.
"To the best of my knowledge, none of the high-protein diet authors have
ever published any studies in any peer-reviewed journals documenting
that their approach can help people lose weight safely and keep it off.
In contrast, my colleagues and I at the nonprofit Preventive Medicine
Research Institute have published our findings in the Journal of the
American Medical Association and other well-respected peer-reviewed
journals. Part of the value of science is to help you sort out
conflicting claims, to distinguish fact from fancy, what sounds good
from what is real. I'm not trying to tell you what to eat; just to
provide scientifically based information so that you can make more
informed and intelligent choices.
"If you eat a low-fat diet based on whole foods, you are likely to lose
even more weight than on a high-protein diet, your cholesterol levels
may come down even more, and you will feel better, look better, love
better, taste better, and smell better. It's not all or nothing -- the
more you move in this direction, the more benefits you receive. And you
will significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other
illnesses rather than increasing it. You can lose weight and gain
health."
"It's so easy to make nice, thick smoothies when you freeze the fruit
[Editor's Note: Thanks, Pam!!! This sounds like a great smoothie! For
those who are trying to cut back on refined sugars, be sure to check the
label if you are using a commercially prepared juice. We would suggest
using a 100% juice, with no added sugar. Freshly squeezed fruit
juice is best. Frozen concentrates are also good. For bottled varieties,
"Hi Jill,
I bought the Oxycise! videos last year (around October) and didn't even
view them until December. When I did view them I got very excited and
'pumped up,' did the 15 minute exercise for three days, then lost my
motivation and have been frustrated ever since. I made myself a promise
that today I would start the program
again and try it for 30 days. I'll e-mail you and let you know how I
did. I believe the program can work but it's up to me to be committed to
it."
She's so right -- Oxycise! does work -- but you have to use it! And you
have to be committed. You are the one who has to "make it happen!" I
wish we knew the rest of her story.... I hope she stuck with her
commitment and reached her goal!
When my kids were little, one of their favorite TV super-heroes was
"He-Man." One day when I was shopping in a craft store, my little
4-year-old daughter picked up a long wooden dowel and held it high in
the air, while dramatically reciting a line from the Saturday morning
cartoon: "I have the POWER!"
Wisdom from the mouth of babes!
We sometimes feel like we are trapped by our own bad habits, or
self-destructive behaviors. We may feel that there is no hope for us
ever conquering a weight problem, or establishing a daily habit of
exercise. Yet the truth is that we DO have the power to conquer any
habit and to rise above any situation. Because we have the power to
CHOOSE our thoughts and our actions from moment to moment. And the more
often we make choices that are "in line" with our true desires, the
greater our power becomes to conquer the obstacles in our lives,
whatever they are. Each of us is responsible for "writing" our own
"Success Story!"
It does takes commitment, and time... and probably multiple attempts.
But we can learn so much from our setbacks, if we will look at them as
learning experiences, and not failures. And there are also many sources
of support available to us: through prayer or meditation, friends, and
encouraging family members. But when it comes right down to it, WE are
the ones who have to decide how we will act and how we will respond to
life each day. Nobody else can make us succeed. Whether it's a matter of
choosing our attitude in a difficult situation, or choosing what to eat
for lunch, or whether or not we will exercise today, it's up to US!
Realizing that it's completely and totally up to ME may feel a little
scary at first. But that realization can also become a very liberating,
empowering discovery.
I love the part in "The Wizard of Oz" when Dorothy finally learns how to
get back home to Kansas. The good witch Glenda tells Dorothy to click
her heels together three times and say, "There's no place like home."
Dorothy is amazed that the solution is so simple, and Glenda explains,
"You have always had the power... but you had to discover it for
yourself!"
I wish the solution to all weight problems was that easy -- clicking our
heels together and saying, "I want to be thin!"
But even though it's not easy, it's not as impossible as we sometimes
think! Many of our customers have told us that losing weight with
Oxycise! has been much easier than they thought it would be.
We DO have the power!
You can overcome any habit, and you can rise to the challenge of any
adversity. And you CAN achieve a stronger, shapelier, more attractive,
more flexible, more active body. Oxycise! is the perfect tool to help
you reach that goal!
"This is my second go-round with Oxycise! I started a couple of years
ago just to humor a friend who was RAVING about the results. I saw
remarkable results in just 1 month. I cannot tell you why I quit. It was
a gradual slide back into poor eating habits and no Oxycise! After
reading Dr.Phil's book on weight loss I decided to "get real" and turned
to Oxycise! again, as well as learning to eat healthy. I planned to
Oxycise! 5-7 days a week, but I feel so good every morning that I don't
want to start ANY day without it now. I eliminated white sugars and
flours and only count fibers to be sure I am getting enough fresh fruits
and vegetables. I now PREFER these snacks and additions to my meals. I
also only eat until satisfied and not again until I am hungry. The body
has a genius way of letting us know when to refuel. The results? After 1
month, an 11 pound weight loss and 1 clothes size. I only weigh every 2
weeks. I was surprised that the loss was not more significant the last
time, but realized that muscle does weigh more than fat. I am more
impressed with the 'sculpting' of my body through Oxycise! When I fit
into my favorite jeans, a size smaller, I went out and bought another
pair a size smaller yet because I will be there next month with Oxycise!
Another benefit that I have not heard anyone else state is the improved
bladder control. I am 51 next month and the mother of 6. I had been
contemplating surgery for stress incontinence but every day my control
improves with Oxycise! At the end of this journey I will send pictures!
Thank you Jill!"
COLLEEN'S GOALS
June 5, 2004
"My goal is to send you pictures in November with a 40-50# weight loss.
With Oxycise! I don't worry so much about what the scale says as I do
with how I feel and how my clothes fit. The lower number on the scale is
only another "jewel" of weight loss. Another is being able to take off
my wedding rings without soap (this week) and going down to the next set
of hooks on my bra! What I've learned is that it gets easier every day,
but I still need to guard my new habits. I'm finding joy in the
journey!"
Thanks,
*A* Deep Breathing for Better Health -- It's Catching On!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A number of people in the medical and scientific community are convinced
that deep breathing is the key to better health.
One of our Oxycise! friends sent us a copy of an article which appeared
in the Health and Fitness section of the Cleveland "Plain Dealer". In an
article entitled "Doctors Empowering Patients by Promoting Belly
Breathing", Carol Krucoff of the Washington Post writes that people who
breathe shallowly or chest breathe are "doing it all wrong." She adds,
"You're also putting your health in
jeopardy."
Krucoff writes, "This technique [deep breathing] is so powerful that
physician James Gordon teaches it to nearly every patient he sees, from
people with advanced cancer to those crippled by arthritis to school
children struggling with attention deficit disorder. He's taught it to
war-torn Kosovo, to anxiety-plagued medical students at Georgetown
University and to hundreds of health professionals who have attended his
workshops on mind-body-spirit medicine."
"Slow, deep breathing is probably the single best anti-stress medicine
we have," says Gordon, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the
Georgetown University School of Medicine and director of the Center for
Mind-Body Medicine in Washington.
"When you bring air down into the lower portion of the lungs, where
oxygen exchange is most efficient, everything changes. Heart rate slows,
blood pressure decreases, muscles, relax, anxiety eases and the mind
calms."
The article continues, "Obviously, everyone alive knows how to breathe.
But Gordon and other experts in the emerging field of mind-body
medicine, say that few people in Western, industrialized society know
how to breathe correctly. Taught to suck in our guts and puff out our
chests, we're bombarded with a constant barrage of stress, which causes
muscles to tense and respiration rate to increase . As a result, we've
become a nation of shallow 'chest breathers,' who primarily use the
middle and upper portions
of the lungs. Few people -- other than musicians, singers and some
athletes -- are even aware that the abdomen should expand during
inhalation to provide the optimum amount of oxygen needed to nourish all
the cells in the body.
Krucoff quotes Andrew Weil, director of the Program in Integrative
Medicine and clinical professor of internal medicine at the University
of Arizona in Tucson as saying: "The simplest and most powerful
technique for protecting your health is breathing."
Weil states, "I have seen breath control alone achieve remarkable
results: lowering blood pressure, ending heart arrhythmias, improving
long-standing patterns of poor digestion, increasing blood circulation
throughout the body, decreasing anxiety and allowing people to get off
addictive anti-anxiety drugs and improving sleep and energy cycles."
"Western medical education at the moment doesn't include information of
this kind", says Weil. "In the four years I spent at Harvard Medical
School and a year of internship in San Francisco, I learned nothing of
the healing power of breath." Weil notes that many systems of meditation
and numerous spiritual practices center on conscious breathing.
Krucoff adds, "There is little scientific research documenting the
healing power of breathing, in part because its practice is so new in
Western medicine. And unlike drugs or devices, breathing has no
manufacturer who must sponsor studies to support its use."
"Increased interest in studying the effects of nontraditional healing
therapies such as relaxation breathing led to the founding in 1991 of
the Office of Alternative Medicine, now the National Center for
Complementary and Alternative Medicine, at the National Institutes of
Health. As a result, more medical scientists are beginning to examine
the healthy impact of a variety of mind-body therapies such as
meditation, guided imagery and Eastern exercise -- yoga, tai chi and qi
gong -- which typically incorporate focused breathing."
It's exciting to see that some medical professionals are beginning to
explore and recognize the benefits of deep breathing!

"I have been Oxycising since Oct/98. I am 42 years old. There are
wonderful benefits to this program -- far more then can be posted and
every one seems to have different ones. A few are: I have ton's of
energy, better stamina, I sleep so much better, better regularity, NO
more dark rings under my eyes, better concentration, I am stronger and
my muscle tone is far more firm and defined (I do lift light weights )
-- it wasn't until I Oxycised that I noticed the definition that you
get! I have Fibromyalgia and I was in a car accident that changed a lot
of my life. I had pain...my moods were HIGH and LOW, I felt very
depressed and I was on a lot of medicine... I think that Oxycise is a
great way to get the oxygen to the brain and other body parts and that
can help you to focus and give you the energy that you need to be able
to deal with everyday crises & problems that arise! I have to say that I
am a lot happier and healthy today. Even my husband says that he has the
old me back again... I am NO longer on medications anymore and I handle
life with more vibrance and enthusiasm. When people meet me ..after
hearing what I have gone through they say that you would never know to
see me by my attitude and my posture! Oxycise! is a program with no
jarring to the joints or back and it helps to alleviate a lot of pain! I
think Oxycise! is the best aerobic workout ever!!! I say try it and see
for yourself!"

Many years ago, a large sailing vessel was becalmed at sea, several
miles off the coast of South America. After a few days, the crew ran out
of drinking water and the men began to die of thirst. Finally another
ship was sighted and hailed by the crew.
"Water!" they called out. "We need water!"
"Let down your buckets!" came the reply. "You are in the stream of the
Amazon River and there is fresh water all around you!"
Could it be that the solution to weight problems is likewise all around
us -- in the air we breathe? The Oxycise! System provides a step-by-step
program which teaches you to literally transform your body from the
inside out, using the power of oxygen!

Health Tip: ALMONDS: BETTER THAN OLIVE OIL
New dietary guidelines released by the Departments of Agriculture and
Health and Human Services now emphasize types of fat in the human diet
instead of total fat. The change reflects a need to educate Americans
about the health benefits of unsaturated fats (found in foods of plant
origins such as safflower, sunflower and soy bean oils) as well as
monounsaturated fats (found in foods such as olives). These types of
fats tend to lower blood cholesterol while saturated fats and trans-fats
(found in meats, shortening and hydrogenated vegetable oils) tend to
raise cholesterol.
Looking for a way to boost the "good" fats in your diet? Try almonds.
While many people are aware that olive oil is high in monounsaturated or
"healthy" fats, almonds contain more monounsaturated fat per calorie
than olive oil. Just 24 almonds (1 ounce) contain nearly 10 grams of
monounsaturated fat and only 167 calories. Almonds also contain more
vitamin E - a high powered antioxidant and essential nutrient - than all
other commonly eaten nuts. But do all things in moderation. The
guidelines recommend that fat comprise 30% or less of total calories,
and saturated fat no more than 10%.

*A* Fine Tuning the Oxycise! Basic Breath
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A customer writes:
"I've been doing Oxycise! for a couple years. I love it for its health
benefits. Oxycise! says take deep breaths and let it out quickly but
other health practitioners say to take slow deep breaths and slowly let
it out. What is the difference and which method is better?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's not so much the speed of your breathing (the number of breaths per
minute, or how quickly you inhale or exhale) that makes the difference
-- but how much air volume you use (big inhales!) and how much power you
put into your exhales.
Breathing fast -- taking many breaths per minute -- won't do much good
if those breaths are shallow!
Jill Johnson does follow a set breathing rate on her videos in order to
keep the workout within the 15-20 minute time frame. And on one of the
videos you DO hear Jill saying, "Really burn it out!" But she is
referring to the power of the exhale (the speed of the AIR being
expelled) rather than how quickly you do the exhale. You will probably
want to follow the pace that Jill sets when you do the video workouts,
but when you Oxycise! on your own, you can breathe at any speed that is
comfortable for you. Just use lots of air volume and power.
Always relax your abdominal muscles when you inhale. If the abdominal
muscles are tight, you won't be able to take in a deep, full breath.
It's AFTER the initial inhale that you will "turn on the power" of your
abdominal muscles as you do the "Lift." The abdominal "Lift" is a
lifting/tightening motion of the abdominal area. It's very similar to
the muscle contraction that happens automatically when you cough or
sneeze. The goal is to maintain that "Lift" throughout the 3 sniffs,
exhale, and 3 extra puffs. We also ask you to do a "scoop" with your
lower abdominal muscles. (All of this is explained in detail on our
Level 1 introductory videos -- and in extra detail on the "Easy Does It"
Level 1 introduction tape. For more information, please see our website
at http://www.oxycise.com/store/edilevel1.htm )
When you exhale, don't just let the air leak out of your lungs, but
rather breathe out "with resistance." Flattening your lips creates a
smaller "escape hole" for the air, and thus requires you to increase the
power of your exhale in order to overcome this resistance. Exhale with
power, by keeping your ab muscles tight. It may help to think of your
abdomen as a powerful engine that is compressing and pressurizing the
air in your lungs, and propelling it upward and outward. (Imagine a
plastic bag full of water, then think of poking a hole in that bag. The
water would run out of the bag all by itself, but if you were to SQUEEZE
the bag, the water would come out at a much faster rate.) When you
exhale, your abdominal muscles help SQUEEZE the air out faster. You
don't have to breathe in and out faster... you just make your exhales
more intense -- and thus the speed of the AIR is faster. So whether you
breathe fast or slow --the more your work your abdominal muscles, the
more air you will move in and out in a given time.
When I Oxycise! on my own, without the video, I sometimes breathe at a
slower pace. I do this by making the hole between my lips even smaller
(by flattening my lips more), and I release a smaller flow of air. So it
takes a little longer to empty my lungs. But the air is still "under
pressure" when I exhale, with lots of "ab power" behind it.
One thing I like to do that helps me remember to breathe out with power
is to direct the air flow from my mouth directly at my chin. I like to
be able to feel a strong stream of air on my skin as I breathe out. This
gives me instant feedback as to how much power there is in my exhale.
"I have been Oxycising! for 3 weeks now. The first week, I actually
gained several inches. (So discouraging.) Then, the second week, I
suddenly lost about 12 inches and was just blown away...so exciting.
This week, I lost another 5 inches, which puts me about 9 inches below
where I started. This is good. I have been keeping up with my body fat
percentages... and so far it has gone from about 42% to 36% as of today.
Pretty impressive."
Lisa mentions these additional results:
"I have to walk to 4 flights of stairs to get to my office (we're on the
3rd floor.). I used to have to stop half-way up and rest, but now I
don't. I'm still slow, don't get me wrong, but my recovery time is much,
much quicker already.
"My skin has begun to clear up and looks 'fresher.'
"My breath support when I sing has improved and I can hit notes now that
I haven't been able to in years!
"I can actually feel that I am forming real abdominal muscles under my
fat (I have quite a bit to lose).
"I have noticed an increase in my libido (much to my husband's delight!)
"I am having some mild insomnia, but I've noticed that even if I don't
get enough rest, using a couple of 'Oxybreaths' (is this a word?) or
doing the commuter tape really helps me make it through the day."
