OK, you've read the "Success Stories", you've visited the website. You've decided that Oxycise! is your ticket to a slimmer, healthier body (and you're right!)

The big day arrives...your videos are here...you can hardly wait to begin! You spend a few minutes rushing through the Basic Breath video, anxious to move on to the "real workout"! As you begin the 15-Minute Workout, you try to incorporate all the steps you can remember...you're tucking and tilting, sniffing and puffing, lifting and flexing! You are on your WAY!

But wait!! You're forgetting the MAIN ingredient -- You're not really BREATHING!

The MOST important part of Oxycise! is the breathing! That's what Oxycise! is all about -- delivering extra oxygen to your body. It's the main objective, the top priority!

So slow down. Don't be so concerned about trying to learn all the body positions as quickly as possible. Instead, focus on taking in deep, relaxed inhales. Then breathe out "with resistance" as Jill says. Exhale through tightly pursed, flattened lips (avoid making wrinkles) while creating "back pressure." You should be able to hear the air being forced out of your mouth as you do this. Tighten your abdominal muscles and use them to help push the air out.

If you do only this -- breathing deeply and powerfully -- then you're really "on your way!" All the other details will come with time and practice. Jill Johnson has says, "As people become familiar with the Basic Breath and continue to do it with more power, then they will burn calories and fat...The more oxygen you pump in and out, the more calories are burned."

Remember: HOW you breathe will have a greater effect on your success than any other single factor!

"I have kept my weight off. I feel that Oxycise! is still the best program for weight loss and health available. It took me a year to really get my eating habits under control. Cutting out the red meat and once or twice a week having chicken or turkey and using soy products has been a big help along with cutting out the white stuff: white sugar, white flour products and dairy has helped me feel much better. I do have a treat once in awhile but that is not done often. The payoff is great in how you feel when eating this way."

I started the Oxycise! some time ago, well about the first of the year, and I had 50 pounds I wanted to rid myself of. I started the Oxycise! and low-carb diet at the same time and I have lost over 50 and am maintaining this quite well. It took me 6 months to do this and I am so proud to have the program to use. I tried it with just the low-carb and it was slow and as soon as I added the Oxycise! I not only started to lose, I felt a lot better.

Hi Julie,
I have a question about the commuter audiotape I was hoping you could answer.

This week I injured my left hip and quad, so I'm going to just do the commuter tape for the next couple of weeks so I won't aggravate my injuries while they heal. It's just too painful to do L1. I am going to do this tape sitting on my bed, not in a car, so I obviously don't have a steering wheel to work with. What exercise modification can I do for the "steering wheel pull out" position to help the triceps? I'm just going to do a pec press for the "steering wheel push in" position.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. I am also going to post this question on the message board to see if any of the members have any suggestions.

Hi Donna,
So sorry to hear about your injury!

You might consider buying an exercise band (or maybe you could get creative and make one with a piece of strong, wide elastic or a bicycle inner tube).
Pulling the band outward with both hands will approximate the motion of the steering wheel exercise from the Oxycise! Commuter Routine.

Here's another position you can try for the triceps area:

Find a fairly heavy, large book, or a couple of cans, or some 1-2 pound dumbbells, and place them on your bed, at the top end. Lie on your bed with bent knees. Stretch your arms up over your head, parallel with the surface of the bed. (Move farther down on the bed if necessary, so your hands don't hit the wall or your headboard.) Pick up the book with two hands (or the cans or dumbbells.) Adjust the weight as needed. As you gain strength, you may want to find heavier objects.

Raise your arms slightly upward (toward the ceiling) and hold that position while doing the Oxycise! Basic Breath. You may wish to lower your arms back down to the bed during each inhale.

A variation of this, requiring no weights, would be to grab onto the bottom edge or bar of your headboard and think of "lifting" it up toward the ceiling, if you have a headboard constructed in such a way to allow this.

Can EFAs help with weight loss?

"Recent research on EFA nutrition has yielded some intriguing new findings. One of these is that increased intakes of these essential fats appear to reduce tissue levels of triglycerides (stored fats), which improves the sensitivity of insulin (the hormone that drives amino acids and glucose into muscle cells), so reducing the risk of obesity and CHD(1). Initially, these beneficial effects of EFAs were thought to be due to changes in the fatty acid composition of the cell membranes, leading to subsequent alterations in hormonal signalling. However, when researchers dug a little deeper it became apparent that something else was going on...

"They discovered that these fats, particularly those of the omega-3 family, play essential roles in the maintenance of energy balance and glucose metabolism. In particular, they observed a phenomenon known as ‘fuel partitioning’, whereby dietary EFAs were able to direct glucose (from digested carbohydrates) towards glycogen storage while at the same time directing other fatty acids in the body away from triglyceride synthesis (i.e. fat storage) and towards fatty acid oxidation! In addition, these studies suggested that omega-3 fatty acids have the unique ability to enhance thermogenesis (the burning of excess fat to produce heat), thereby reducing the efficiency of body fat deposition. In simple terms, this fuel partitioning phenomenon appears to conserve carbohydrate while simultaneously shedding fat ­ exactly what most athletes would give their right arm for!"

Some time ago I was reading a newsletter for sufferers of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, and was excited to hear about a doctor who recommends daily deep breathing exercises! Except for breath-holding, the technique he described is very much like Oxycise! (see below)

"Paul Cheney, M.D., a leading CFS physician, recommends breathing exercises to increase oxygenation in the body for multiple health benefits. He recommends this simple technique: 1) Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds; 2) Hold your breath for 7 seconds; 3) Exhale through tightly pursed lips for 8 seconds, creating "back pressure" (you should be able to hear the air being forced out of your mouth as you do this.) "I am not new to Oxycise!, but I did not stick with it. I have a problem with consistency. However I know all of the information I read is logical and I started Oxycising again when I saw an article in the 'Parade' magazine. I said to myself, 'I need to give this another try.'

"Hi Julie and Jill,
I have been suffering with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for over 20 years. About 4 years ago I went through some very big emotional changes in my life. My daughter (also my baby) got married and moved 800 miles away. My father died and my mother moved in with us. And I was going through terrible perimenopause. My daughter-in-law introduced me to the Oxycise! program. Within the first 6 weeks I lost the bloat in my stomach that comes with perimenopause and an overall total of 7 inches, not to mention 10 pounds. I started having more energy and feeling better about myself and my stress level went down. I have never gotten overweight to the point of being unhealthy so it wasn't all about the weight loss, but it was about my self-esteem and feeling better! Since then I have kept Oxycising a part of my routine workouts. As many Fibromyalgia sufferers do, I also suffer with T.M.J. (from clenching my teeth at night) so I have to adjust my breathing accordingly. If my jaws feel too tight to smile while breathing in, then I just don't, or I try to breathe mostly through my teeth. And since San Diego has been very dry this year, deep breathing seems to hurt my sinuses so many times I leave on a cool mist humidifier while I'm Oxycising. I have also found that some of the exercises tend to tighten my muscles up too much so I normally do a 10-15 minute aerobic workout before Oxycising, or I incorporate a brisk walk into my workout to warm up those tight muscles before Oxycising. I realize that most of you CFS sufferers are doing good just to get out of bed some days but if you can just start your breathing while you are laying there, the rest should eventually come more easily!

If you're like me you've had a very busy summer.... fun, but sometimes hectic! It's when life gets EXTRA busy that you need to make sure you're setting aside time for Oxycise! everyday.

Have you heard the story of the woodcutter who was trying to increase his income by cutting down more and more trees? He started working even harder and longer than he had been, but the more he worked the more he seemed to get behind! Then a friend asked him if he had taken time to sharpen his saw.
