*A* Dealing With Plateaus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some of the hardest challenges you will face, and the most critical
chapters in your own weight loss Success Story will be those times--and
they will come-- when you are eating healthy and doing Oxycise!
faithfully, yet not seeing obvious changes. You may feel discouraged and
may even feel like giving up. It's during these lulls, or "plateaus,"
that the battle is won or lost.... so don't surrender!
It may help to know that EVERYONE experiences "plateaus" in their weight
loss. Even Jill Johnson, who lost almost 50 pounds during a six-month
period, has described going for days, and even weeks, without seeing any
positive changes on the scale or tape measure -- in spite of diligent,
faithful efforts. At other times she says her tape measure would show
changes, but not the scale. Or visa versa. But in time--and that's the
key--consistency did pay off for Jill, as it will for everyone who
refuses to quit. Jill has commented that it's during these slow times
that it's most important to remain consistent.
Sometimes it will may take some extra effort or extra workouts to get
off a plateau. One customer told us, "I've found that doing Oxycise!
once a day maintains my weight--twice a day and the pounds start to come
off again. I've hit a few plateaus, then moved off them, so I do expect
to lose more."
Another customer, Sue, posted a message on our website:
"I've hit at least 3 plateaus in the last 2 months, and haven't lost
anything for about 11 or 12 days, then suddenly I'll start losing
again."
Later I wrote and asked Sue how she was doing, and she shared the
following:
"So far I've lost 44 pounds, 3 inches from my chest, 4 1/2 inches from
my waist, 5 inches from my hips, and 3 inches from my thighs! ...I had
given up on ever being slim again!!! This feels sooooo good!!!"
When you find yourself on a plateau:
1. Continue to Oxycise! faithfully -- if you've gotten "off track" work
toward getting consistent with your workouts.
2. Don't judge success by your scale alone. Remember that progress may
happen in the form of inch loss, increased muscle (more muscle means a
little extra weight over a period of time), and toning -- not just a
loss of weight.
3. Consider increasing your workout frequency or intensity in order to
"get things moving again." Adding light weights -- or strapping on some
ankle and wrist weights -- will increase the intensity and calorie burn
of your workout.
4. Look at your eating habits and try to find ways to make improvements
here and there, a little at a time.
5. Drink lots of water.
6. Most importantly: don't ever give up...Keep on Breathin'!!
"Hello,
Just a note to say how much keeping hydrated has helped me! I try to
drink 3 quarts a day of fluids. At first it was an impossible task,
water just isn't that great. I now juice an orange and lemon in 1 quart
of water with a tad of Stevia and drink that down before I eat anything
in the morning. I love juicing collard greens, cukes, celery and a
couple of carrots for an afternoon drink (dilute in half with water).
And then I enjoy my tea, hot and cold for the third quart.
"Thanks for all the great inspiration to breathe deeply and praise our
God!"
Thank you.
Kathy, from Wrightwood, CA wrote to us on September 13th:
"Hi, I've been trying Oxycise! for about 5 weeks now and have lost a
total of 7 inches. That is really amazing to me and also everyone who
sees me and asks what I am doing."
But Kathy adds:
"...in the last 2 weeks the loss of inches has really slowed down from
the first three weeks. Have I hit a plateau? Is this common at this
point? I thought maybe I should be dieting more than I am but I'm really
not a big eater. I don't know what I may have lost in pounds because I
do not have a scale. I do know that some clothes are fitting that did
not a month ago so that's how I know I am losing something. Please let
me know what I can do at this point to speed up the loss of inches and
pounds."
Here's a September 26 update from Kathy:
"Thank you for the response to my question about hitting a plateau. I
feel better now that I am not alone in this dilemma. I continue to
Oxycise! every day and use the tape in the car when I have to leave
early. I have told EVERYONE, including my son in Colorado about your
program. They are all amazed that you can lose inches and pounds and
sizes just by breathing! My son said he has ordered the intro. package
and is going to give it a try. I will continue. I HAVE lost 3 lbs. but
the best part is that my clothes fit better now. Thanks for the support
too."
In an April 2004 Reader's Digest article* several foods were featured
for their ability to provide good nutrition along with protection
against various cancers and diseases. These foods were: asparagus,
chilies, grapefruits, kiwifruits, mushrooms and sweet potatoes. The
article advised limiting or eliminating the following: pickled foods
(high in nitrates), mayonnaise (high in calories, potential for food
poisoning), and smoked meats (nitrates and other cancer-causing
substances).
Lettuce: the Greener the Better!
"Deep green romaine lettuce has about twice the fiber, B vitamins,
calcium, potassium and trace minerals of pale green iceberg, seven times
the vitamin C and more than 10 times the vitamin A. Phytochemicals such
as lutein (which may help protect vision) are in the pigment, so romaine
is a better source of these, too."
Here's one of my favorite "Success Stories" from our files...
Date: September 07, 1998
Subject: New User
"To make a 20 year story of hell short, I weighed in at 317 pounds early
this year. Both my doctor and I had reached a point where we were
frustrated with my problem. I could see no happy future for me. You name
it, I have either tried it or bought it. I have joined probably every
fitness place in the city, but it's impossible to do aerobic exercise
when five minutes into the routine, you're dead!
"In my never-ending search for a healthy way of losing weight and
keeping if off, I had read some articles on how proper breathing during
exercise was the key to increasing the body's metabolic rate. (This is
what the specialist I had seen said I needed to do.) This is all fine
and dandy, but I couldn't find out how to achieve this. So I was back to
square one... frustrated and desperate. Then one night Jill was on the
Canadian home shopping channel. Between what I had been reading and what
Jill was saying on TV, I figured I had nothing to lose and purchased the
tapes. I had spent a darn sight more on many other gimmicks, so what was
$30. That was four weeks ago and I have not looked back!!!!
"I have lost at total of 17 inches (measured at the bust, waist, hips,
thighs, and arms). I feel energized and ambitious. I have an appointment
to see my doctor for a weigh-in at the end of October and I can hardly
wait to see her expression. I cannot believe what has happened. After 20
years of hell, I can actually see a light at the end of the longest,
darkest tunnel anyone can imagine.
"All I can say is that if anyone is hesitant about trying this method,
don't be; and if you aren't seeing results, maybe you need to review the
tapes again and follow slowly. I don't do each position exactly the same
way that Jill demonstrates, simply because I can't get my body into some
of those positions, but I have found a happy medium and will continue to
work at it 'til I'm doing them just like Jill.
"Jill, if they could canonize a person for making people healthy, happy,
and hopeful, then you get my vote. I have spent many long hours crying
myself to sleep, begging for a miracle by the morning. Nothing ever
happened until you came into my life. Both my husband and son can't
believe the difference in just this short a period of time. They both
have been pillars of strength for me in the past and now I can finally
pay them back with a happier, healthier mom and wife. I tell everyone I
can about you and what you are doing. Please accept my sincerest and
deepest thanks for making a miracle happen."
Update: When we last heard from Gail she had lost 39 pounds and 38.5
inches
She shared,
"Yes, I did reach plateaus and will probably continue to. It is
important everyone understands that there will be periods when no inches
will come off but you will lose weight, and vice versa. And this does
happen. I find it totally amazing.... when one leg will look slightly
different from the other for a bit, until the other catches up. I use
that kind of thing to let myself know that I may be working one side
more than the other! I don't get discouraged about the inches in the
places that I measure, because I found that although I may not have lost
any inches in my waist, there were inches missing in places I don't
record. You just keep on going!"
[Gail has given us permission to share her story. If you'd like to read
additional comments from her, too lengthy to include in the newsletter,
Doing Oxycise! "first thing" in the morning is a great way to make sure
*A* Did You Get Your "O!"s Today?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Life gets so busy that we often "push aside" things that we don't "have
to" do, but know that we could be/should be doing to help us feel better
-- things in the "important-but-not-urgent" category -- like Oxycise!
for instance!
Almost everyone who starts doing Oxycise! regularly sees positive
differences in energy level, feelings of well-being, muscle tone and
flexibility. But even so, many of us get "off track" and find it hard to
make Oxycise! a daily habit. One of the best ways to make sure you get
your "O!"s for the day is to do Oxycise! first thing in the morning.
Just for fun I did a search through our email files for the words "first
thing in the morning", just to see how many "hits" would come up. I'd
like to share some of the results with you. All of these people seem
very happy with their results. Maybe doing Oxycise! "first thing" would
be a good way to make sure YOU get your "O!"s for the day!
*** FLORENCE ***
A few years ago, Florence reported that she had just started doing "Easy
Does It" Level 2 and said that she had lost an inch from her "front
porch!" She also added:
"I find the best thing for me is the first thing in the morning, about
an hour after breakfast and before I start out the busy day. If by any
chance I have appointments then I try to do the Oxycise! at night about
an hour after I have supper. It is not a really strenuous exercise
program therefore I am not hopping all over the floor. Actually my knees
have been better since doing Oxycise! because I have had arthroscopic
surgery on them both. I just gave my husband my scale to hide for me so
that I do not get on it every day. I am not overweight but for my entire
life I have been getting on that scale every day and if I gained a pound
or two I went ballistic. I am now going by how my clothes feel on me.
Easier said than done though, because this AM I automatically stepped to
where the scale was and now it is gone. I am trying to eat healthy and
stay in the best physical condition I can be for my age which happens to
be 80."
"One day at a time. I keep busy tap dancing, playing shuffleboard,
reading, crocheting, and anything else I can think of. I feel
good,everyone says I look good, so I will keep on with the program and
hopefully in a short time will progress to just Level one... Thank
goodness for Oxycise!"

"I love it! I do the exercises first thing in the morning before I go to
work. It helps to wake me up and energize me for the day. I notice a
definite difference when, for some reason, I don't get to do them in the
morning. I even do them on weekends simply because it makes me feel
good.
"I had lost about 12 pounds before I ever started Oxycise!, but then I
seemed to plateau. I couldn't seem to lose those last 3-4 pounds that I
wanted to. Since using Oxycise! consistently for the two and a half
weeks, I've lost a couple of pounds. I think if I would take my
measurements, that is where I would notice a big difference. My clothes
are loose on me. I like loose, but a lot of things are now baggy!
"I love it! I even had to buy new jeans."
Sincerely,

"I never felt as alive, as fresh, as "on the ball" as when I was doing
"O", half an hour a day, first thing in the morning. My brain and my
body was responding incredibly fast. I had no more mood swings and my
face my illuminated by this beautiful glow that I can't even describe in
words. For me, all these wonderful side effects were enough to brighten
my day..."

"Hi Julie. Well I am still Oxycising every morning. I enjoy the letters
from you and all of your staff. The Success Stories are good too. They
are very motivating. I think it is finally starting to work for me.
After about 2 months. I was not breathing correctly and I think I am
now. Also someone on your site told me to breathe deeper on the exhales.
It is working. I am doing the tape by memory. That way I can go slower
and make sure I am breathing deeper and deeper. I think tomorrow I will
try the tape again and see if I can keep up. I was finding it a little
hard to keep up the pace on the tape. Thanks so much for all the advise
and trying to help me. It finally has worked. In the last two weeks I
have only lost 2.2 lbs. but that is better than I did in the beginning.
Now I am back to losing 50 lbs total in the last two years. I am a
Weight Watcher fan also. I do like the breathing too. It does get you
going. I am going to keep at it. I do it first thing in the morning. In
fact I get up 20 minutes earlier in the morning just so I can do the
Oxycise! I also do an aerobic tape in the afternoon after I get home
from work. Thanks again."

"I have been enjoying Oxycise! for over 3 months now and I am so
thrilled to have lost over 18 inches and 8 pounds. I have the levels 1 -
4 videos and abs and upper body. I don't feel I need the buns and thighs
as it's not my problem area which is mostly around the middle...
"Thanks again for a wonderful program. I can't go a day without doing it
first thing in the morning. It helps a lot with my back pain."
(UPDATE)
"It's me again. This morning, Feb. 1st, 2002, I decided to measure and
weigh myself. Well as of today, since October 15, 2001, I lost 13.5 lbs
and 21.5 inches. I am so thrilled at the results. When I ordered
Oxycise!, I had told myself that I couldn't afford not to do 15 minutes
of exercises a day. I had tried everything, bought every machine, gone
to the gym, you know the story... I had lost weight, but it always came
back with a few extra pounds.
"The first day I tried Oxycise!, I felt its benefits right away. That
night I didn't have any pain in my legs, no back pain and a lot more
energy. Could it be the Oxycise! working already? I started losing a few
inches that same week. But the weight would stay the same. When I was
reading the comments on the newsletters, I was a bit wondering why my
weight would stay the same. But I didn't give up and did it every day. I
noticed that my weight started to go down after I started doing the
level 3 video. As you mentioned, I was probably breathing more deeply
which made a difference.
"I have been told that my face has changed. I only have one chin now. My
goal for 2002 is to continue to Oxycise! every day, eat healthy meals
and lose 25 more lbs.
"Thanks for your support until now and the Oxycise! Program is the best
thing that ever happened to me in the weight loss area."

*C* HEALTH TIPS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A website article suggests that essential fatty acids in the diet may
play an important role in weight loss.
".. fascinating research is emerging from the world of nutrition to
suggest that essential fats in our diet can exert significant control
over key metabolic genes in our cells, particularly those involved with
fat storage, fat burning and glycogen synthesis. In plain English this
means that, while you might not be born with the ideal genetic make-up
for your chosen sport or event, correct fatty acid nutrition could help
to 'reprogramme' your genetic code!"
"... more recent research on EFA nutrition has yielded some intriguing
new findings. One of these is that increased intakes of these essential
fats appear to reduce tissue levels of triglycerides (stored fats),
which improves the sensitivity of insulin (the hormone that drives amino
acids and glucose into muscle cells), so reducing the risk of obesity
and CHD."
There are two main essential fats: alpha-linolenic acid (or Omega-3) and
linolenic acid (or Omega-6). These fats cannot be made by our bodies, so
we must get them from food sources.
"The best dietary sources of EFAs are nuts, seeds, fatty fish and
unrefined whole grains. However.... while the omega-6 fatty acid is
quite abundant, omega-3 is more difficult to obtain. Unless your diet
contains significant amounts of seeds and whole grains, it's likely
you'll be falling short of your optimum omega-3 intake."
See Table of EFA food sources at: http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/omega-3-omega-6.html
"....simply using more bottled oils, such as soy, rape and walnut oils,
on salads and in cooking, may not be the answer either. Commercial oils
are inevitably refined, processed and stored, which means that the
essential fatty acid content will be partly degraded. Fatty fish, such
as mackerel, herrings, sardines, trout and salmon, are rich in two
different kinds of omega-3 fats - eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) - which can help to supplement the role of
alpha linolenic acid in the body. Notice, though, that olive oil is
devoid of omega-3 and very low in omega-6. Contrary to popular belief,
olive oil is a very poor source of EFAs!"
"They discovered that these fats, particularly those of the omega-3
family, play essential roles in the maintenance of energy balance and
glucose metabolism. In particular, they observed a phenomenon known as
'fuel partitioning', whereby dietary EFAs were able to direct glucose
(from digested carbohydrates) towards glycogen storage while at the same
time directing other fatty acids in the body away from triglyceride
synthesis (ie fat storage) and towards fatty acid oxidation! In
addition, these studies suggested that omega-3 fatty acids have the
unique ability to enhance thermogenesis (the burning of excess fat to
produce heat), thereby reducing the efficiency of body fat deposition.
In simple terms, this fuel partitioning phenomenon appears to conserve
carbohydrate while simultaneously shedding fat - exactly what most
athletes would give their right arm for!"
EDITOR'S NOTES
A Word of caution: This is a case where you CAN have "too much of a good
thing." Practice moderation in your dietary choices and don't "go
overboard." Adding small amounts of raw nuts and other EFA sources to
your diet may be very beneficial, but don't overdo it, or you'll just
add on extra weight.
Flaxseed is listed as the best source for Omega-3 fatty acids. It is
also high in fiber and other beneficial nutrients. I buy whole flaxseed
in the bulk foods section of my local grocery store and then grind it
immediately before using, in a small electric grinder. Using freshly
ground seeds insures that the essential oils will be fresh and provides
the best nutrition benefits. Flaxseed has a pleasant, nutty flavor.
Mary, in Virginia, loves Oxycise! so much that she told many of her
friends and family about it. She sent us a copy of the letter that she
sent to some of her family and close friends, after introducing them to
Oxycise! :
"Dear Friend,
A few reminders to help and encourage you:
"After you do the Level One 15-Minute workout a few times, review the
intro and let Jill remind you of the best positions, the way to breathe,
to "lift, tighten and tuck," etc. (If you have a weak area of your body,
Jill will encourage you to modify any position to accommodate your
needs.) Consider Jill your personal trainer, guide to better health and
encourager.
"Hope you will find this something you enjoy. It makes sense to me. It
is not as complicated as Pilates and Yoga, and yet it strengthens the
"core" muscles and others-and definitely tightens your stomach and
strengthens your back.
"I find that if I do this 15 minute routine first thing in the morning,
it will rev up my metabolism for the whole day-but do it whenever you
can. These exercises are not silly or 'unusual.' It is a routine that
you can do for the rest of your life that will help strengthen you for
the stresses and strains of everyday living, and help you to keep your
weight in check.
"If you find Level One too easy, you can call the 888 number on the tape
and order the next levels. Oxycise! even offers a 15-minute routine for
Abs and back, and another for buns and thighs. There is also a tape for
elderly or disabled people that is new. I have not seen it, but it might
be great for any "older" folks you know, who could benefit from getting
more Oxygen into their bodies, and doing a few simple stretches, etc.
(And for all of us as we get older and do not want to get down on the
floor.)
"Mary Ann, it is hard to believe that 15 minutes a day of deep breathing
and simple isotonic, isometric and stretching exercises will help you
lose weight (if needed) and stay in shape. But I am living proof that it
does. (Because my mother and sister gained weight around their stomach
as they aged, I accepted this eventuality as part of my genetic makeup
and destiny. The longer I do Oxycise!, the more fat and inches I lose
around the middle.) I just wish that I had discovered this routine years
ago. I know that there are many folks that this would help. (Busy people
who do not have a great deal of time to devote to exercise, or do not
want to go to a gym, and who have tried and failed at "dieting.) But
most important, this simple routine is of great value even if you do not
need to lose weight!
"Oxycise! is all common sense. It is enjoyable and easy enough to do for
the rest of your life.
"We all make choices in life, this is one choice that will help anyone
improve their health and increase their strength and flexibility. Here
is my strong recommendation:
"Do something good for yourself everyday--do 15 minutes of Oxycise!
Wishing you the best of health always!
Enjoy!
