Here's an email from Dawn, one of our OxyChat readers.  She has some great ideas for setting goals, getting motivated and putting your plans into action.

"Hi Julie, thanks for the great newsletter, you really do a good job!

There are probably hundreds of books on motivation.  I hope you get a lot of letters like mine saying, this is what works for me...

..I would add a few things to your list from my own experience.

1. Write down why you want to do Oxycise! (lose a specific number of pounds, inches, reach a specific health goal, etc.)

2. Write down your goal in specific terms.  ("I will do Oxycise one time daily for 15 minutes for one month")  Post it where you can see it everyday. (Be fair to yourself.  Too much is a certain recipe for failure)

3. After you have set a specific goal, pick a time of the day when you can and will do your exercise.  This may mean getting up earlier or carving some time out of the day.  For me, I get up earlier because once I start my day, exercise gets lost in the whirl of activities and challenges to be met or simply fatigue!  This also means I have to go to bed earlier at night.  Of course, I am a morning person, so this works best for me.

4. Make a visible record.  In my qigong, my teacher invented a childish form of a record:  a sheet of smiley faces for 100 days that you put on your frig or some other place seen everyday. (Can be downloaded from chilel.com)   If you miss a day, you have to go back and start all over again.  When I first started my qigong, I thought, "Oh, I don't need something like that, I have outgrown such things"  (ego speaking there, grin) but when my practice decreased as most programs that establish new habits do eventually, no matter how rewarding they are, I grasped it as an extra help to me.  Believe me, when you have done something for 45 days or 70 days and you would "lose" it all if you missed a day,  there is a great deal of motivation to keep up the practice!!  100 days is a very long time, but it sets the habit and gives us a chance to see the immense rewards. Of course, you don't lose anything and have gained a lot by that regular practice, but there is something so satisfying and empowering by overcoming our mind resistances. On the rare occasion that I miss my practice (a death in the family, a stay-in-bed illness or some other emergency), I make it up over several days, doing extra. I sometimes have to start over several times before something finally "takes"!

"Sometimes it helps me to analyze why I'm having trouble reaching a certain goal of changing a very old habit (like eating before I go to bed at night) and be aware of the emotions (e.g. for me, an old family pattern plus fear of being hungry) and/or behavior that leads to continuing that particular habit (e.g. I read while I eat and just keep eating and eating.  Solution? Stop reading while I eat.  The reward is that I get to read when I have finished eating and cleaned up and washed my teeth!)"

A few thoughts of my own...

1. Take one day at a time--focus on NOW

What am I doing right now?  What decisions am I making right now?  Is my behavior right NOW in line with my goals?  As I get older (and hopefully a little wiser!) I am more and more convinced of the importance of paying attention to small details.  (The quote "Aim small, miss small" comes to mind.)  We have no control over what we did yesterday or what we will do tomorrow... only what we are doing today, at this moment.  Make good decisions right now-- today--and great things will happen.  


2. For best results, aim for at least one Oxycise! workout per day, at least 5 days per week.

If you can work up to more than one workout per day, or up to 6 days a week, or do extra "reps" in between your workouts... even better!  Start with a small goal that is within your reach, then work up.


3. First Things First! 

If losing weight is a "top priority" for you, then make Oxycise! a top priority on your daily "to do" list.  Personal training coaches recommend completing "dreaded tasks" first.  (Many of us hate to exercise, so it's a good idea to do it and get it over with!) And once you get DONE with Oxycise! (and probably even while you are doing your workout) you will realize how good it feels!   It feels especially good to know that you have completed your goal for the day.  Then you can "cross it off your list" and give yourself a gold star on the calendar!


4. Do Oxycise! "like you mean it!"

When you do Oxycise! do you really "give it your all?"  Or are you going through the motions a little half-heartedly?

Jill suggests doing Oxycise! "with gusto" -- with real energy and effort.

The breathing is the most important part of Oxycise!  Are you just breathing, or really BREATHING?  And are you flexing and stretching and really making your muscles WORK?

May I suggest that you make your workouts more effective by paying extra attention to your abdominal muscles:

Relax your abdominal muscles as you breathe in deeply, then the "vacation's over" -- really put your abs to WORK.  Lift and tighten, scooping in with your abs (tighten up your muscles much the same way as if you were going to cough, but KEEP them tight!)   Keep your abs working hard as you take in 3 extra sniffs...tricky, but effective!   And then REALLY work them as you exhale... and exhale all the way, trying to blow ALL your air out... THEN try to squeeze out just a little more air with 3 tiny, extra puffs  (you should feel a little "burn"in your abs if you do this right).

Whatever you do, make the most of every breath!
