A cranky attitude isn’t the only side effect of sleep deprivation. According to the National Institute of Health, “sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.”
But that’s not all – missing out on the recommended 7 to 8 hours of sleep can also lead to weight gain. Studies have shown that a lack of sleep has a greater impact on our ability to regulate our weight than we realize. In a study by the Mayo Clinic, sleep-restricted subjects consumed an extra 559 calories per day and gained more weight than their well-rested counterparts. The study found that people who get six hours of sleep per night are 23 percent more likely to be overweight, while the likelihood of being overweight for those who get less than four hours of sleep per night is astounding 73 percent.
Not only do sleep-deprived people consume more calories, they also don’t burn as many calories while their body is at rest! A study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that “normal sleepers” burned 5 percent more calories while at rest, and 20 percent more calories after a meal than those who were sleep deprived.
In addition to the additional calories consumed, the sleep-deprived group also had higher levels of the “hunger hormone” (ghrelin) and lower levels of the “satiety hormone” (leptin), which decreases our appetite. In other words, cutting back on sleep is a great way to gain weight.
But if you’re one of the millions of adults who experience sleep issues, getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep may not sound like such an easy task. One great benefit of Oxycise! deep breathing exercises is increased levels of serotonin. Serotonin improves mood, helps you feel satisfied after meals, and can even help with sleep and relaxation. Check out these comments from Oxycisers who have experienced this benefit first-hand, then email and let us know what benefits you have seen from Oxycise!
